BJ???

I never understood why they picked the charctor of BJ, was his sweet smooth nature suppose to be counterbalance to hawkeyes crude and course nature???

reply

I think when they replaced a character on the show, they made a conscious effort to make the character different enough from the character he replaced so he wouldn't be accused of being the same character. I think BJ's character was short-changed. He was pretty much Hawkeye's shadow from the start. They couldn't replace him with another womanizer like Trapper.

Agree with you about BJ. As much as I like his first episode, he's put into a place where he's Hawkeye's pal/sidekick who's not allowed to develop his own characteristics. Luckily they didn't make that mistake with Charles.

reply

He had his moments, but like you said, he was the sidekick.

reply

I thought his character developed quite a lot over the 8 years he was on the show.

reply

He did, especially after Frank left. Charles' character changed the whole shows' chemistry a lot, for the better.

AGAIN, dbrockskk1....can you PLEASE tell us just what the hell "coarse GN" MEANS???
I don't understand WHY you, or anyone else for that matter, would waste time posting something that nobody can understand, hell, you probably don't even know what you meant, I have a sneaking suspicion you did not mean "coarse" (something that is rough) but "course", which should've been proceeded by "of"???
But all that aside, if you think it's fun to post nonsensical, stupid & meaningless crap - it's certainly your prerogative.........but, WADR, you sound like a fool, imo.

The original poster used the word "course" when the spelling of the word (s)he was trying to use in that context was "coarse". The post "coarse GN" was apparently a terse way of correcting the spelling and somewhat preemptively and self-deprecatingly pointing out that the correcter is himself behaving like a "grammar Nazi."

I agree with you that the post "coarse GN" is cryptic and that cryptic two-word posts are annoying. However, if you frequent IMDb for very long, you will probably run into a lot of similar posts. But the most disturbing posts usually have a lot more than two words.

reply

I think you're correct in your description.

I do find it funny that some posters get really worked up over spelling and grammar to the point that they can't even see the point of the comments that have been posted. In my experience, these are the same posters who attack people for having differing opinions.

Thanks very much for explaining "coarse GN" to me - I always check for explanations at Abbreviations.com........and they had 52 definitions for GN, but not one of them was grammar nazi! (I'm an Editor on that site, I'll go add it)

That was always one of M*A*S*H's best traits. The replacement characters were the opposite of the ones they were replacing.

BJ had a more relaxed chemistry with Hawkeye and better back-and-forth exchanges than with Trapper. Wayne Rogers often looked peeved at Alda having most of the lines whereas Farrell was happy to have such a great gig fall into his lap.

B.J.: Just woods and more woods.
Hawkeye: I met a little girl with a basket for her grandma.
B.J.: Wearing a little red riding hood?
Hawkeye: Actually she was with seven little dwarfs.
B.J.: She's in the wrong woods.
Hawkeye: Or the wrong story.
Col. Potter: Are you finished, doctors?
Hawkeye: Are you...?
[B.J. nods]
Hawkeye: Yes.

I saw a special called 1980: the year in television on Youtube. It had a short interview with some of the M*A*S*H actors. Mike Farrell said he knows it is Alan Alda's show. As far as Wayne being mad at Alan, I heard they remained friends despite Wayne leaving the show.

reply

I'm sure many of you will disagree, but Wayne Rogers was a tough act to follow, he had better comic timing, and was a much better actor overall than Mike Farrell, When he left, he took part of the show with him..

reply

I agree with you, knight523.... - I always found Wayne to be a much more "natural" actor - Mike's role seemed to be more about just spitting out a WAY too quickly delivered snappy comeback, to whatever Alan had just said - it felt really disingenuous to me.

Bj was fine at the beginning but then 'moustache BJ' became a quip machine.

B.J.: ...We're lost.
Hawkeye: Lost? As in, "Where the hell are we"?
B.J.: Not totally lost, we're still in Asia.
Hawkeye: You said this is a shortcut!
B.J.: It is a shortcut! Look how fast we got lost.
