They should have had Flagg as a regular guest star instead of Sidney.
Flagg: You took a yellow red before a white American. That's pretty pinko.

Sidney wasn't meant to be fun. Sidney fit the more mature aspect of MASH after it "evolved" away from the influence of the feature film into something else.
Flagg was fun, but was too much of a caricature even for the first two seasons. Later in the series, he just seemed borderline insane.
