METV is now censoring M*A*S*H

I was watching the episode from season 1 "The Moose" last night when I noticed this:
The Sergeant that owns the moose calls her a *beep* when talking to Hawk and Trapp. But they totally censored it with dead air when he says the word. At first I thought it might have been the recording but when Hawkeye tells him, "Ah, Sergeant, I don't care for that word."
Serg. say, "What word? ____? Hawk, says, "Yeah, ____!" Blank and blank again. I know the word *beep* is supposed to be used in an offensive way but seriously now they're censoring my show. It's okay METV we can take it. We're all adults. We heard it the last 80 times it showed on your station.

reply

Holy Crap! Now I got censored on here too. What the hell is going on? Did I stumble onto the Twilight Zone message board by mistake?
Let's see if I can get this word out:

G
O
O
K

reply

I wonder if they will do it in the episode with Ron Howard.

I think the origin of the word is kind of accurate, even though it is now not PC to say. During the time, the word only referred to Koreans, stemming from the word "hanguk."

I blame autocorrect.

You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

reply

When I was a kid that "word" was used for just about any Oriental except for the Japanese who had their own "word." Slope, slant, g...k, those were some of the nicer things said.

reply

I think a lot of those words became generic over time. Sometimes, the meaning is lost over time, just like the accurate word "oriental," which has lost its original meaning and has become offensive.

I blame autocorrect.

reply

You should see how they censor Columbo with the closed captioning.

Instead of suspicious, it is suXXXXious. See what slang they X'd out?

And cocktail becomes XXXXtail.

Man, the PC nazis have really taken over!

reply

I'm going to have to check that out.
While I was watching last night I was wondering if they'd censor Spearchucker's name. They didn't.

reply

Even though his name is considered sorta a racial slur and no way would they even think of using it today, even though the Drs. weren't being mean in using it, I'd be surprised if CC censored that. It seems to be going for key words and not names.

reply

Hawk says, Crap - Sonofab!tch and bast@rd in different episodes. We'll have to see if they let those go.
Also in The General Flipped at Dawn, Gen. Steele sings a pretty racist song about the "Darkies coming out" or something like that. Let's see if they do anything to that episode.
"But first, a song."
Chopper pilot looks confused.
"Well, come on. It's in your blood, _____."

reply

"When the sun goes down and the stars come out,
the darkies gather 'round and they all begin to shout
'Hey, hey! Uncle Bud,
It's so neat to beat your feet on the Mississippi mud."

That "word" is censored even on the disc collection, Steele sings "they all gather 'round... I'm surprised the whole scene isn't censored from, "but first, a number..." on.

reply

Oh, Lord, that song is about as bad as Camptown Races. I always thought I heard him sing the words, "the darkies gather 'round" or "the darks gather 'round," but I never heard it censored. But, Jesus, you'd think that even back in the seventies they'd know they were going a bit overboard on the racism in that scene. I know, things, weren't as PC back then but still. There are a couple other scenes during the series that are kind of cringe worthy too.

reply

The weren't using it just for the heck of it, but to show the racism. smh We weren't afraid of using words back then. What better way of showing the ugliness of the words than to say them out loud?

You think that was bad, they used ni@@er on All In The Family, The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son. Arch also used c00n and jungle bunny while George Jefferson and Fred Sanford used cracker and honky. I'm sure there were epithets used on Chico and the Man, too, but I never watched it.

And then there was Blazing Saddles. lol

Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

reply

Except on those shows it's used in context of the character or story.

reply

They should never censor anything m

reply

It's censored on the DVD? I never noticed.

---
I blame autocorrect.

You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas.

reply

Actually it's "It's a treat to beat your feet on the Mississippi mud."

reply

To cut the scene would've completely altered the episode storyline

reply

The writer talks about it here

https://youtu.be/5GuzUFTSn3Y

reply

That was actually based on a real event with some comedic license. One of the writers was in the navy during WWII on a ship.

Something happened and a sailor was being court-martialed a black sailor was called as a witness and the presiding officer did just that.

He told the sailor "in your own words what happened?, but first a number. And then preceded to sing that song.

reply

This is what's known as the "Scunthorpe Problem" for exactly that reason.

I've taken to changing out words unnecessarily for (attempted) comedic effect, such as when someone mentions a "cockpit."

reply

I'll never forget watching a commercial back in the early '70s for the "new Ford Thunderbird."

Some gorgeous foxy blond in a white jumpsuit is stroking the top of the "beautiful new Ford Thunderbird. You'll just looove it's luxurious cockpit."

I almost had to give up the football game to take my wife into the bedroom to "discuss" it.

reply

I liked it better when it was on TV Land.

Metallica and Iron Maiden are Bronies

reply

I broached this question on MeTV's Facebook page, and some ass-hat who I think works for them tried to explain that it was the distributor who edits the shows, not the networks. Some FCC compliance bullcrap. Myself and another guy didn't believe him.

reply

So the episode: "Sometime You Hear the Bullet" was on the other night, where Ronnie Howard plays Walter/Wendell and joins the marines to earn a medal for that dumb ol' Bernice. Wendell tells Hawkeye that he wants to kill him some g000ks and Hawk explains that another word for g000ks is people. MeTV did not censor it this time. Why would they censor it in one episode but not another? Same season too.

reply

Noticed that as well. They probably haven't got to it yet. Check back on its next rotation in a few months.

It's also uttered again in a future episode when a nurse gets miffed at Hawkeye for delaying their date to help some South Koreans. I think he sticks his tongue out at her after telling her she has some not very nice thoughts in her head.

reply

Oh, and he almost forgot his chicken. Yep I remember that episode. "L.I.P" if I'm not mistaken.

reply

I think you're right! My recorder says that LIP will be aired this Thursday, Sept 1.

reply

Watched it tonight "LIP". The nurse saying the word G**k was not censored.

reply

I heard it too. I'm really starting to doubt myself on "The Moose" episode where I could have sworn they blanked the word three times. We'll have to wait until the next rotation to see if I was mistaken or not.

reply

As far as editing and censorship goes episodes or always edited when sold into syndication to allow for more commercial time.

Some times scenes are cut in the beginning, middle or the closing tag.

I have recorded syndicated episodes from almost 20 years ago and certain scenes are cut but appear in the METV episodes.

reply

Holy crap! This PC $hit is getting out of hand! I'm glad that I have the entire series on DVD so I can watch M*A*S*H in all its uncensored glory!

reply

Episodes are always edited for syndication to allow more commercial time. Also individual stations can make edits or not air an episode for various reasons.

reply

They did the same thing with McHale's Navy. They bleeped cheeseNIPS.
