Fair to say Hawkeye and Charles considered each other unspoken friends?

I never really got much of a friendship vibe between Charles and BJ...but it seemed to me that beneath the barbs Hawk and Charles might exchange there certainly was respect for each others skills and a friendship but each wee too pig headed in their own ways...Charles because he was naturally snooty and hard to overcome a lifetime of that and Hawkeye because he his "preconditioned" not to like the third swampmate. Remember in Charles first episode he says something like "can we just jump right to hating him now".

I always liked the later years best when Charles was on the same side as the others and getting along with them.

I think you're right, they evolved over time to develop a sort of bond as each learned respect (and Charles learned empathy). I wouldn't say they ever had the sort of friendship that would see them hanging out together for fun outside of a war zone, but I imagine they would speak well of one another in later years, and probably be happy to see each other if there was ever a reunion.

In the episode Who Knew? when Hawkeye is giving the eulogy he mentions Charles as one of the people who are close to him.

They're both alpha type males in their own way which is why there is respect, BJ on the other hand is more like Hawk's sidekick always faithful and unquestioning.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
