Recycled Jokes

How many times can you name where they re-used a joke throughout this series? I can think of a few instances.

When Houlihan would begin bitching about something for Burns, who sat next to her silently. Someone would comment, "You're in good form today, Frank." This was done at least three times.

When they were in the shower and wounded would arrive. After it was mentioned that there were incoming choppers, everyone to the OR on the double, the person showering would say, "Well at least I don't have to scrub up." At least three times used.

And how many appendixes did they remove? 4?

Any else?

reply

On the appendices, are you asking how many healthy ones they removed or how many in total? If it's total, I can think of four: two healthy colonels, Private Wendell (Ron Howard), and Margaret.

Another joke they used a few times was making a nin-com-poop joke if someone said CINCPACFLT (sink-pack-fleet).

reply

They also removed Henry's appendix in the episode "The Long John Flap."

reply

Charles called Radar a non-com-poop in one episode.

reply

"Loitering in front of an operating table." Once said by Hawkeye to Frank in an early season, and said by Charles to Hawkeye in a Season 8 episode.

reply

Trapper and BJ both say someone has the IQ of a house plant

reply

At least twice they had a PA announcement "The following personnel have volunteered for a ten mile hike" followed by dead silence. This one may even have been cribbed from the MASH movie.

reply

I dunno if this counts but how many times did they joke about the swill from the still and how bad the food was?

Even though they had to actually eat it, I wonder if it really was that bad for them to do method acting off of it or was it tasty and they just pretended it was bad.

Let me know if I'm on your ignore list.
Thanx!

Rizzo, in two separate episodes, tells Col. Potter and then Hawk that he will 'hep' them and each one responding with: I don't want your "HEP!"

reply

On two separate occasions, Klinger asks Rosie for help and she says, "anything for a friend. Five dollars."

reply

I can think of two separate occasions when the phrase "He would give a drowning man a glass of water" was used. Once against Frank and once against Charles.

reply

FatherMulcahyFan, you just reminded me of another: Mulcahy saying the phrase "jawbone of an ass." Once when marking his place in the Bible, and a few more times I remember him saying the phrase, either quoting or paraphrasing as either a punchline or a lead-in to a punchline. They just did that so the writers would have an excuse to use the word 'ass'.

reply

He also said it to Hawkeye in the episode "Dear Sis", when Hawkeye was teasing Father Mulcahy about going another round with the unruly patient he punched out. He told him that he felt bad about hitting him and didn't was Hawkeye speaking of it with the jawbone of an ass. I still want to slap that jerk so hard his mama feels it for being a rude jerk when Mulcahy tried to apologize to him.

reply

And, even though we're not counting AfterMASH (No M*A*S*H fan would), but in one episode, Potter repeats that joke that says whenever Klinger lies, his nose gets shorter.

reply

I was in the Army - GI's Constantly complained about the chow -

reply

I was in the navy and swabbies constantly complained about the chow as well, even though the Submarine Base chow was pretty damn good most of the time.

reply

I spent 15 months on ships and the food could be okay, but I think it's always been a common theme to complain about food in the military, just like being in high-school.

A number of times they refer to a Rabbi as a 'Jewish Priest'. I think the first one to do it was Radar, which fits his character's way of talking, but eventually even Col Flagg describes one of his aliases as a Jewish Priest.

The following dialog can be heard in both "The Incubator" and "Henry in Love:"

Blake: These are Captains Pierce...
Hawkeye: ...and these are Captains McIntyre.

Brad

reply

A few times they used the line "Take two _______ out of petty cash."
