Nurse Bigelow could have replaced Margaret

This is my idea for how Loretta Swit could have left MASH and went to Cagney and Lacey.

Enid Kent AKA Nurse Bigelow could have been promoted to series regular. She was already starting to appear in many episodes. Bigelow could have been promoted to Captain and been made asst. Head Nurse.

Margaret gets promoted to Lt. Colonel and becomes head nurse for the US 8th Army in Korea ( basically the writers create the position for her). Margaret then becomes a recurring character. She visits every so often making inspection trips around the various MASH units/evac hospitals.

The newly promoted Captain Bigelow becomes new top nurse for the 4077th. Maybe have Kellye get promoted to asst. head nurse.

Margaret comes back for the final episode. She visits Hawkeye in the mental ward. Later she comes to the 4077th final goodbye dinner/Klinger's wedding.

That wouldn't have been a bad scenario.

Thanks!

That would have worked well.

The easy part about a show set during a war is that they had many options which they could have used;

Margaret gets married to Ponobscot and gets pregnant, goes back home.
gets transferred back home/to Germany some other base.
Family troubles at home as per Radar, goes home.
Finds a sugar daddy type General who actually takes care of her. Gets cushy post.

In the end it wouldn't matter too much, I never saw her character as essential to the show and I would have loved to have seen more of the other nurses and especially an actress who can portray strength without yelling all the time.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

Those are all terrific ideas.

I think Loretta Swit, or her agent, should have sold it that way in contract negotiations.

They could have written those guest appearances into her contract.

writers would have had a fresh character to write about, and Swit would have had a safety net if Cagney & Lacey was cancelled.

We will put new American metal into the spine of this nation.

If Loretta Swit remained on Mash in a guest role it could have been a win-win for CBS. Mash fans could have made the jump to Cagney and Lacey.

I guess I would've welcomed that. I liked Margret but she could be a nag.

Don't agree. Margaret was the foil for Hawkeye and co first as Frank's partner then as the friendlier but military nurse. I don't think the show would have been as good with another Hawkeye stooge as head nurse and main character

I would have preferred Kellye to replace Margaret as head nurse.
