What was Wonka doing and thinking? (Spoiler)

When Charlie and Grandpa Joe partake in the fizzy lifting drinks, Wonka and the rest continue without them.

It seems like Wonka just left them behind which seems weird. What were the others doing right before Charlie and Joe rejoined the group? Surely they all had to notice and wonder where Charlie and Grandpa Joe were.

I always figured that Wonka and the rest continued to the golden geese room and before they got down/returned, an Oompa Loompa became aware of that and reported it quickly.

I think Wonka knew that it wasn't Charlie's idea to steal the drinks so he gave Charlie a free pass on that until the end of tour. Then Wonka brought it up to see if Charlie can break free from his grandpa's bad influence.

Good answer. Thanks.

Maybe he wanted them all along to be tempted by the drinks. And he also knew that they'd burp if they drank.

maybe he was thirsty.

Joe and Charlie were at the back and began to leave the fizzy drink room with everyone else. But, just before they left, Joe grabbed Charlie and suggested that they stay behind and have a drink. Obviously the party assumed that they were right behind them.

Then we see the party in the egg room and everyone is looking forward at the geese. Joe and Charlie sneak in and take their place just as Wonka turns to address them.

As far as Joe and Charlie were concerned, they'd just lucky that no one caught them.

Unfortunately for them, either Wonka saw them or an Oompa-Loompa worker did.

I felt Wonka set up tests for each of them, and the Fizzy lifting drink was Charlie's test. Wonka also knew that kids could be rule breakers so he set up the redeeming test with the Everlasting Gob Stopper.

How are the fizzy lifting drinks aimed as a test to Charlie? The Chocolate Room, the gum, the geese, and the television setup all reflected the children, but how does floating soda pop fit in?

temptation, he made sure there was rooms to temp them all. As far as how he would know Uncle Joe's personality well enough to know he would go for it, I don't know.

Breaking rules was never the test for Charlie. Sure if he had done some really obnoxious thing like the other kids did he would have been kicked out, but Wonka knew he wouldn't. Proof of this is the inventing room where all the kids were told not to touch anything yet they all did without punishment. Violet was only punished because she took and chewed the Three Course Dinner chewing gum without permission.

I felt he made tests for one of the kids to break the rules and something happen to them. May not have had one room picked out for each kid, but he set a series of temptations for any of the kids. The lifting drink just happened to be the temptation for Charlie and Uncle Joe.

I felt the Gobstoppers were given as a test to everyone. The guy went to all the kids not just Charlie.

Exactly. Because that was the only test. Wonka didn't purposefully tailor tests for each kid. He made just one. The kids falling victim to temptation is just part of the game. As I keep saying, the only test was whether the children we honest enough and respectful enough to maintain Wonka's secrets. Charlie gave the gob-stopper back, thus he can be trusted.

I don't think he picked each room for each kid, but set up a group of temptations that one of the kids might fall for, which all kids found theirs, but the Gobstopper was the failsafe test. This is of course just my interpretation of the movie. I also like this version better than the newer one for the fact that Charlie was a good kid but not perfect.

Correct, but I want it to be clear that the Gobstopper was never a test for the other kids. The golden ticket contest was created solely for Charlie and the test was only for him. Even if one of the other kids had returned the Gobstopper he would not have given the kid the factory.

reply

That makes no sense whatsoever. Then why invite four other kids?

This I don't agree with since all kids were approached.

No. The contest was exactly as we saw it. Five random kids were picked to tour the factory and, if one of them proved worthy, they got the factory. If none of them did, he'd simply hold another contest.

If Charlie had left with the Gobstopper, the movie would have been about 20 minutes longer. Slugworth would approach each kid and ask for the Gobstopper. Each kid had been denied their lifetime of candy so they should be angry enough to sell the Gobstopper. If one or more of the kids refused to turn it over, they win the factory.

Surprisingly, I doubt that Veruca would sell the Gobstopper. She is selfish and has plenty of money already. It's her Gobstopper and she's not giving it up.
