Barbara Harris

...is terrific in this movie; managing to get more pathos out of her two scenes than should be possible and resulting in a well-deserved nomination (I think she should have won over Cloris Leachman but her lack of screentime may not have helped). So very moving -- overall this film is pretty mixed, but I'd wished it had been about her character because she was actually more interesting than Hoffman. You can see him just stand back and hand the film to her in their scenes.

Oh that's an interesting connection re: the maiden name. Hmm!

I didn't fully get into this film until Barbara Harris showed up, which unfortunately is very late in the film, but she captivated me big-time. She's a wonderful actress who never fails to deliver, even though she's usually relegated to smaller characters often late in the film.

You are dead on correct about Barbara Harris! This movie is very tedious and everyone acts like a whiney little bitches and they style of the film may have been dazzling in 1971 but for 2014 it is severely dated. When Barbara Harris walks onto the scene the movie then becomes watchable and exciting. There is Barbara giving another memorable performance that proves was a great talent she is and her character though neurotic is honest and sensitive. A deserved Oscar nomination.

I was more or less enjoying this movie before she showed up, I mean, I didn't think it was quite as bad as I think you thought, but I have to agree, when she showed up, it changed everything. I wish there was more of her in this. She was so captivating. I would have loved to watch a movie of her character rather than Hoffman's.

Barbara Harris shows up at approximately the one-hour-13-minute mark, and for about 15 minutes she makes the movie worth seeing. She has a brief scene at the end, too. She is always wonderful.

I wish the movie itself was worth seeing; I waited 45 years to see it, and it was a flop. It may be the worst movie in which Dustin Hoffman ever starred, although it has its moments. Taken as a whole, it's pretty bad.
