'The relationship'
The flashback to his love life and all the waves. That could be an icon of the 70's.

shareHe's a stiff and he can't handle stuff. That's what I think the movie is trying to show us. By modern standards he has all kinds of psychological issues but to put it at the most basic level he's not up to the task of being a complete human being. This might be because of his crash-and-burn and crisis of conscience when he came back from the war. No doubt the waves scenes and the flashbacks are references to the conflict inside him: a battle against his demons he knows he's losing. He does all he knows how to do, which is to drive very fast. A strange sort of response to stress that lacks skill. The picture painted by this movie is not one of a complex man.
