Vanishing Point (1971) Deleted Scenes and Behind the Scenes pictures

This is a list of all (possible?) deleted scenes from Vanishing Point. This is something i made for fans of the movie like myself who are always interested in finding out more about VP and all the scenes that never made the final cut and are unfortunately probably lost forever. Due to the well known studio interference and their demands to make the cuts on the movie the final version has some weird and suspicious editing which indicates that something is indeed missing from certain scenes.

Two things i must mention, if anyone knows more about deleted scenes (NOT including the famous Charlotte Rampling scene) please share what you know, and also if anyone knows where i can read shooting script or original script from Guillermo Cain (NOT the transcript that you can find online) which apparently is like some 140 pages long (If we count 1 page = 1 minute of running time, could you imagine having a version of the movie that is 140 minutes long?), please let me know.

And please, serious replies only, alright? I know that not everybody are fan of this film but in that case, go on boards of movies that you like and don't talk sht about this one just because.

Now, deleted scenes;

Possible deleted scene where Kowalski stops on side of the road after the first chase? This could be why (if you listen closely) it sounds like the song cuts very abruptly right after Kowalski drives across the bridge.

Possible deleted scene showing Kowalski during his cop days (but its probably just a promotional still shot).

According to official pressbook of the movie which you can read here

http://www.hansego.de/userhtml/kowalskipages/vppbook.html

there was alternate (or additional?) flashback scene of Kowalski's cop days scripted or filmed (or both);

""Again he goes into a reverie of his days on the police force. His partner, he finds, is taking graft...he rejects the action... and steals his squad car and races off. He is dishonorably discharged from the police force."

Also according to pressbook, there was additional flashback scene which showed Kowalski in Vietnam war which explained how he got the scar on his chest and won Medal of Honor;

"Another recollection...this time he is driving a wounded man to a field hospital through artillery fire. The jeep is hit and he is wounded...we are again in the desert...as the tire on his car blows."

My opinion, possibly filmed and deleted, but not likely. Remember, 20 pages of the script were not filmed due to the schedule/budget cuts.

According to director's commentary, there was originally a scene where Kowalski looks in his rearview mirror and hallucinates seeing posse chasing him. He also said that there were more sequences during the desert scene when Kowalski is lost and before he remembers his dead girlfriend and gets a flat tire, possibly the posse scene and war flashback scenes were ones that were deleted from this part. This could also explain another abrupt sound cut in the music that occurs right when the scene cuts to the close up of Challenger's tire.

According to director's commentary, scene where Kowalski calls Jake after he gets into California was longer, it had establishing shot of phone booth in the middle of nowhere.

According to director, there was an alternate ending which had no sound during the scene where Kowalski drives towards bulldozers, and instead of showing the actual crash scene it ended with Super Soul saying "Yes! He made it!"

Also, director and screenwriter thought about ending the movie in San Francisco but due to the problems with some "high and mighty" people they rather choose to end it the way they did in final movie.

There is a part of some book about screenwriter G. Cain somewhere online (not sure where) in which it's mentioned that in original scripted ending Kowalski actually tries to stop the car but he ends up crashing into bulldozers.

And as a bonus, some behind the scenes pictures;

And, believe it or not, here is the Delaney and Bonnie Motel Shot album that director wanted to use as official soundtrack for the movie, so much so that he would played it to the cast and crew during filming;

(I'm listening to the Motel Shot album as I'm writing this). Thank you for putting up links for behind the scenes photos - I hadn't seen some of them.
