Earth Wind + Fire
In the little documentary about the film, the producer says that Earth Wind & Fire played the soundtrack, live, against a screening of the film. I guess the band was pretty unknown in those days.
The lead tune has got a fantastic groove. It's magic, hard to figure out just exactly what makes it tick. If I wrote it out and gave it to some professional musicians, I don't think it would groove the same way. It's magic. It makes the film.
I enjoyed watching the film, for the sound, for the visuals, and for the general feel and creativity. It's not slick in any way. I just saw Shaft and it puts Shaft into context. It almost makes Shaft look like a white film made by Jewish Hollywood.
