It's all about interpretation. There are now and have always been religious people who interpret their religious texts in such ways that they use it to justify activities that they feel in their hearts are unacceptable. Like using religion to "wash" behaviors that they are not comfortable with. Many people can be comfortable with such controversial activities without religion-based reasoning.
Like it or not, religion is a big part of what has shaped morality in our world, so it becomes the basis many people use to justify things like terrorism, murder, racism, sexism, and slavery. The people who then fight against these things are the godless ones.
In this way, religion can be used to exploit the fears of people. Some (myself included) argue that this is very prevalent with politicians in the Southeastern U.S., who often throw around religious faith at every single interval to prove how much more religious they are than the people they are running against, because obviously, the most religious person is the best one to be holding public office.
So, no, I don't think "black Christianity" is any more of a religion for 'suckers' than any other religion-- it's just used the way the priest in this film states in a way other religions are used. One could argue that white Christians try to exploit one another, as I've explained in the previous paragraph.
