step mom or biological mom?
I just finished watching the film. I got the impression she was a step mom, not the biological mother. Are there any clues in the dialog that confirm she's the biological mom?

shareNo, I just watched it and I really think she's the biological mother. Even if she wasn't, it wouldn't make any difference emotionally when you think about it. There is a discussion of whether or not the father is really his biological father and she confirms that he is, but never mentions anything about not being his biological mother. You'd think she'd mention it there if she wasn't.

If it were a stepmom, the scene would not have been so controversial.
shareyes, biological. it is spoken as such in context throughout the film, at one point he asks his mother if he really is his father's son since he feels no connection to the man. The sort of question completely reserved for a philandering, biological mother.
shareYes, she did say that he was his true biological father at one point. But another time she mentioned his father looked like a garibaldi. And all he could think was women and politics. And he died when he was with some lover. What was that about? any clues?

Her husband looked like Garibaldi. Her father could only think of women and politics and was found by the fascists in Italy with his lover.
shareWell she said she married his father because she got pregnant with his oldest brother and she swore he was his fathers child, how would she know if she was his step mother.
