The naked chick running down the dock....

not one of Bava's proudest moments. I suspect he was under pressure to thrown in some gratuitous T & A (not that it wasn't impressive, mind you) along with the usual carnage in this one. Other than that one "grindhouse" moment, I thought the film was a lot better than I suspected it to be. I am more a fan of his gothic stuff (Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, The Whip and the Body, etc.), and a big Hammer Horror fan. For a slasher film it was pretty sophisticated, though.

Bava was never shy about putting nudity in his films. His 70s films especially often featured nudity, and sometimes it was pretty strong. The love scene in "Lisa and the Devil" comes to mind, which was explicit by anybody's standards. He did love his ladies, and he liked showing them nude. You found it impressive, so Bava's work was successful. :)

You should be my analyst, you've divined my true, innermost carnal thoughts.

Nudity is a pivotal part of the slasher formula (even if the slasher formula hadn't been developed yet). I just don't understand why in a film filled with gratuitous violence, the one shot with gratuitous nudity should be the one to inspire shame.

reply

Agreed. Sex and violence = slasher.

reply

Exactly (and she was damn fine! RIP, sadly).

reply

I agree.

Why is it — especially these days — people celebrate and relish the scenes of women being tortured and brutally slaughtered in these films, yet if woman is shown naked, THAT is somehow highly offense and demeaning to women everywhere? 🙄

Amazing scene! One of the all time great skinny dipping scenes.
