A Review of "Bay of Blood"

“The second movie rated “V” for violence”. This is not the strongest film from horror icon Mario Bava, though it does have its moments. Bay of Blood is a relatively slow, quiet, and confusing story sandwiched between a very intriguing beginning and a shockingly fantastic twist ending. The only times that really make this worth watching are the seemingly endless stream of realistically gory murders, which string along through a plot involving a family member of a wealthy heiress who kills her for her money and property, and attempts to murder anyone else who gets in the way or stands to co-inherit any of her wealth. This includes land surrounding a beautiful bay, which the killer wanted to purchase from her to turn into a resort. Upon her denying the request of sale, the bloody deaths add up. There are a few scenes which are pretty much pointless, and horrible sound mixing and editing, but if you can get past that, what we are left with is a somewhat interesting story, with one gory murder after another. The influence these would have on death scenes in future horror movies is apparent. The cinematography was also probably brilliant upon original release, but the film shows obvious wear and tear and is in desperate need of a restoration and re-release. Overall, it is short enough to keep your attention, and decently creative with the killings. The ending will make your jaw drop. Starring Claudine Auger, Luigi Pistilli, and Claudio Camaso. Final Verdict: Doesn’t Suck.
