Which out of three versions is best?
The Last Man Earth, The Omega Man, or I Am Legend?

Definitely "The Omega Man" I've probably seen it 50 times

DITTO-Chuck Heston & Co.
Double ditto. Vinnie's is horrible, Smith is exercising his ego as usual. This will always be the definitive version, however closely or not it sticks to the novel.
shareI got to say Last Man on Earth is my favorite, but then again I'm kinda bias considering Vincent Price is one of my favorite actors.
Death Is The Road To awe...
Yes, I know someone else who says the same thing. VP is without a doubt the only decent element of this film even if you're not a fan, which I'm not. He's playing against type and is very convincing given the rest of this dreck.
shareDefinitely I Am Legend.
People who don't see this one as superior in every way just aren't intellectual enough to understand Smith's very subtle yet profound acting methods in this film, possibly due to racism.

For me, what made this movie inferior to "The Omega Man" wasn't Will Smith's acting & definitely not his color. He was a bit too young in my opinion, but what I disliked about it was the Dark Seekers & the CGI backgrounds and animals. Even though taking the low budget route to create the look of a deserted world did result in a couple small mistakes, it still had a look of authenticity that the CGI stuff just doesn't have. I also liked the idea of the plague being an unforseen side effect to a cancer cure. Very ingenious!
shareI agree the CGI creatures was basically the only thing I didn't like.

The last man on earth for me

One of the dumbest things I've ever read on IMDb. Quite a feat!
F'ing sh!t up since 2008! http://www.willferrellfanforum.tk/
No doubt, that was some horrible commentary. The thing I love about people who bring up racism is that no one else seems to care, except the person looking for racism, which reveals them to be the racist as they look for it in every nook and cranny.
All these films have flaws, but what makes IAL fail is a combination of things. The dark seekers SUCKED! I heard originally they had actors playing the part, then switched to the pathetic cgi with anaconda style mouth. Just the worst.
Then, compare WHY either Neville remains. Heston's Neville stays because it was his home. It's simple, it makes sense, and honestly, his fortress can actually keep the family out.
Now, let's take s look at IAL. Neville remains why? A promise to find a cure. Ok, sounds great, but the fact that there was supposedly a group living normally 5-8 hours north who could use the help of a doctor who could still work on a cure makes NO SENSE! Some people say, well, he didn't believe it existed. Ok, so a few hours driving wouldn't be worth it?
Next, the dark seekers made his fortress a non fortress. They could rip it apart by hand. The whole idea became stupid for him to stay. Now I'm trying to recall, he sleeps in the tub instead of his bed?
Now, Smith's Neville goes lights out at night, and he turns the generators off so the dark seekers don't hear, but he is running all this scientific equipment in the basement, and you just can not turn all this stuff off. So, generators still need to run, even minimally. If anything, it seems it would have made more sense for Smith to live in the basement.
So, no racism is required to see why this latest version isn't the best, it just isn't what it should have been. One last thing, I actually think it would have been a better film with the alternate ending.
"every way just aren't intellectual enough to understand Smith's very subtle yet profound acting methods in this film, possibly due to racism."
Wow ! It only took one day in this folder for someone to play the race card. Pretty pathetic.

I wanted to like I Am Legend, and I did love Will Smith's performance, but the bad CGI ruined it for me. Sorry. It was horrible!
shareI've seen all three and read the book, "I Am Legend". I never understood why in "The Last Man On Earth" they were more like vampires. I liked "The Omega Man" best. It's one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time.
Laura
"The Last Man On Earth" and the book were identical. The original villans were vampires & the neo-people came along to take care of them. In "The Omega Man" Mathis & the family were the neo-people. The burials & the burnings Lisa tells Neville that she & Richie helped the family with, were presumably of the plague victims exhibiting vampire-like symptoms
shareI never understood why in "The Last Man On Earth" they were more like vampires.
I am Legend.
None of them stick to the novel which in my opinion would make a better movie.
The other two are just two dated especially Omega man.
If you disagree, take the Tyson approach and "Bite me"
1. The Omega Man
2. Last Man on Earth
3. I Am Legend
People keep mentioning how "dated' films are, however, that doesn't mean you have to just look at the cars and clothing and music. The plot and story are what's important. I think the Omega Man told the best story, even if it wasn't exactly like the novel.
My issue with Smith's Neville is his reason for staying. He KNEW there was a sanctuary, and yet he would choose to stay in a city of mutated and dangerous people because he said he would fix things no matter what.
REALLY? Instead of going up north to a safe environment where you might be useful to the remaining group of humanity, you want to hide in the dark and possibly be killed? Just the worst plot.
Heston's made sense because he needed the companionship, even though they were his enemy. He chose to leave once he realized there was hope outside of the world he had known for those years after the war.
It's been a while since I saw IAL, but isn't Smith convinced that everyone is dead? I thought he never believed in the sanctuary. I could be remembering wrong though.

I believe you are correct, but the point was that he realized it had to be a real place once the girl told him about it, and he helped them escape so they could find it. And, seriously, would someone hide out of fear in their home every night if there was the odd chance you could be with normal people? It's not like he didn't have the means to travel, and what would it have taken him, 6 hours? If it wasn't there, he drives home.
The reason IAL is dumb as far as Neville remaining in the home is because Smith's fortress wasn't worth a damn when you think of the powers that the night people had. They ripped the place apart despite mine fields, steel shutters on the windows. It was just dumb.
It just seemed dumb that he wouldn't have had the booby traps to turn on more lights that could actually harm them right outside the door like Heston had, and then an emergency set of lights IF they got indoors.
Also, if he had his laboratory, he'd need quite a bit more generator power to sustain some of the equipment, and it would have to run all night depending on the experiments, like if live subjects where being used.
I think Will Smith is a brilliant actor, and he was very good in I Am Legend but I thought the movie had lots of problems, such as the CGI making the nighdwellers very cartoonish and unmenacing, a limp script, somewhat insubstantial story-line.
For me, The Omega Man was better by a long stretch. Meatier script, more substantial story-line, more menacing atmosphere, better characterisations, great score.
Never seen Last Man on Earth all the way through, but it'd have to be quite a movie to beat Chuck screeching around an empty, sunset-drenched L.A.
I think I'd probably rate I Am Legend and Omega Man about the same (and fairly highly), each has their own strengths. I am Legend spent more time on Neville's routine and captured the sense of isolation, but relied on CGI a bit... I think making the villains traditional villains in Omega Man made for an interesting variation and was just one of several factors that made Heston's Neville more interesting as a character (despite Smith's very good acting). The Last Man on Earth may be the most accurate adaption, but it basically sucks as a movie imo.

Omega Man ..hands down. The feel and look of the city and sets were fantastic. The gothic gloom of the dead city was great and the villians were well fleshed out and creepy. Mutanted Fantics...no bargining and no reasoning with them.
Zealots beat blood thirsty CGI monsters for me each time.
If I am Legend had kept it original ending. It wouldve been a closer race but in the end for me Omega Man is the superior film
1. Omega Man
2. I am Legend
(Abstain from rating VP version -- saw too long ago, and on crappy VHS.)
Reasons:
I am Legend
------------
Pros
1) Great setup (NYC w/virus from cancer cure side effect) -- possibly too ambitious to film well
2) The dog - very moving when lost
3) One truly creepy scene (bathtub)
Cons
1) Will Smith performance nothing special. But I like his casting.
2) Dark seekers just don't work. Seen-one-seen-all zombies, no real interaction, no charm a la Matthias
3) Annoying, distracting, over-the-top CGI
And the biggest:
4) Ham-fisted in virtually every way: story, dialogue, and THE GREAT POINT (religious) at the end. Any real emotional payoff that could have made this add up to something is lost.
Omega Man
------------
Pros
1) Visually STUNNING. Filming downtown early trumps CGI any day of the week, as it turns out. And twice on Sunday. Simple makeup effects and thoughtful camera choices are still the best magic trick.
2) Anthony Zerbe
3) Anthony Zerbe
4) Did I mention, Anthony Zerbe who plays Matthias?
(See separate IMDB post, "Two words -- Anthony Zerbe)
5) Literate, effective, poetic script. It took two accomplished screenwriters to get both the science (Joyce) and the poetry (John).
6) Minimalist but effective set design and cinematography.
(See #1)
7) VERY strong opening. Sets the tone (somber), ambience (deserted litter-strewn free-for-all peppered with bodies and abandoned cars). New cars and clothes for the taking, any film you'd want to see. As long as it's WOODSTOCK.
Cons
1) Charlton Heston.
Action persona? Sure.
Acting? Fraid not.
2) A few weakly delivered lines. "Step on it!" (Rosalind Cash, beating on Chuck like a five-year old girl. And right after delivering some of the coolest on-screen words ever: "When I want you to, I'll turn you, on or off!")
3) Weak ending.
Right idea, story-wise, but weakly executed. Misses the gut-punch it should have been
4) Music.
Yes, I agree. One of the most inappropriate soundtracks ever.
I've gotten used to it over the years, but man -- it took a LONG time.
Yep, I think you nailed it mate!
Well done!
I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!
