Sausages 3 Years After the Germ Warfare Apocalypse?!

In the scenes near the beginning of the movie where Neville is preparing himself dinner, just before the fragging by the family, he is seen placing several links of sausages into a pan (I assume to boil them.)

So, considering that it's been three years since the world came to an end, and that Neville was pretty banged-up immediately after the helicopter crash and probably spent quite a few days convalescing and not going around and looking for meats to refrigerate with an always-on generator connected to a freezer: how the heck did Neville procure sausages for dinner several years after the last butcher in LA died melodramatically clutching his neck with his hands and clawing the air?

I did wonder about this. I think that he would have been living on tinned and pickled food by this point after the disaster.

He takes them out of something, maybe this would help to understand - it looks like a metal box about the size of a microwave. It's not a fridge cuz we see him open that 5 seconds later. It doesn't really look like a freezer but maybe it's a smoker. Anyone know?

I wondered the same thing. One more possibility: they were frozen, and he thawed them. Not sure how good that would be after 3 years tho...

I had some duck in the freezer for about four years. I thawed it and made stew, and I thought it was OK.
