*Sausages* 3 Years After the Germ Warfare Apocalypse?!

In the scenes near the beginning of the movie where Neville is preparing himself dinner, just before the fragging by the family, he is seen placing several links of sausages into a pan (I assume to boil them.)

So, considering that it's been three years since the world came to an end, and that Neville was pretty banged-up immediately after the helicopter crash and probably spent quite a few days convalescing and not going around and looking for meats to refrigerate with an always-on generator connected to a freezer: how the heck did Neville procure sausages for dinner several years after the last butcher in LA died melodramatically clutching his neck with his hands and clawing the air?

Hey what about the grapes and cheese he had with Lisa?

reply

I've wondered that myself, I also noticed that he had crackers to go with the cheese, crackers tend to go stale after a year even if they're sealed in a packet, unless of course they were just plastic decoration food!?

Sausages will survive nuclear holocaust, the next ice age, the diminishing O-zone, and probably even the absorption/destruction of the planet when the Sun expands in 10 million years or whatever.

Yet.. I still crave them.

Okay, that's it! This thread is just TOO damn weird...

I'm taking my pants off now...

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

Maybe he found some pigs still alive and did some reading on meat curing at a library before the Family burned them? I have wondered that myself for sometime.

Why not sausages in a can or jar?

No, they were fresh. I thought the same thing myself, on seeing the film recently.

reply

Ok, nobody knows why but it does seem to be a problem.

I guess we can chalk this up to a major continuity F.U. in the movie props. The only meat that Neville should have access to is Vienna Sausages and SPAM and those nasty Danish canned hams.

One would think so!

They were Zombfurters!

Wouldn't be the only time Heston ate people. More soylent green anyone?

Neville could definitely have caught plenty of fish off the Santa Monica pier, and hunted venison and possibly even boar in the mountains close to L.A.

With regard to those sausages, it's possible he could have stumbled upon a butcher shop with a generator and ample supply of gasoline, raided it, and kept it frozen in his "Honky Paradise" ;)

That in mind, those were some darn thick looking frankfurters - were they pretty common in the early 70s, and were they much better than the standard Oscar Meyer/Ballpark franks we see today in the supermarkets?

reply

My dad and I were wondering the same thing.

Sausages are smoked and salted. This dramatically increases the life of the product.

Consider the early ocean voyages. Ships would take on a supply of salted pork and beef that needed to last for a year or more.

reply

So he'd eat hot dogs and ham as well, cause they're cured as well.
