I agree about the quality. The features are sparse -- two interviews with Dan Curtis -- and even Curtis manages to avoid mentioning the brilliant source novel by Jeff Rice, mentioning only Richard Matheson's script version. (I guess Rice is used to this treatment by now, though.)
Nevertheless, the quality of both films is very good. Perfectionists might nit-pick that "The Night Strangler" has been "restored" with additional footage, and is NOT the original version that was seen on ABC. (Commercial breaks have also been removed.) Even so, the additional footage is not uninteresting. It appears that this version of "Strangler" was intended for TV syndication, to pad the movie out to two hours (with commercials).
By the way, I agree with the original poster. In light of the junk that DOES air over and over on TV, why are these movies almost never seen on cable or broadcast television? That's just idiotic.
At least we finally have the DVD. I found it at the price of $9.99. How could I pass it up?
