Carl Kolchak Vs. Fox Mulder!!!!
Which character is cooler?
shareChris Carter (X-Files creator) says on one of the episodes that this was the inspiration for the X-Files. Also he says that Senator Matheson (Mulder's sponsor in congress) is named after Richard Matheson.

I caught that reference in X-Files...but didn't actually know if it was intentional.
Thats cool it is.
That question is unfair! I'm not sure I could choose. I've always felt like the rumpled Carl Kolchak type, but I have the undying wish to believe of Fox Mulder. They both have the dogged determinism to get to the facts of a mystery and the integrity to support the truth, whatever it may be, no matter how polically incorrect. Hmmm....
I was a big fan of the Night Stalker TV movies and then the series. Later I also became a big fan of the X-Files. It was great to hear Chris Carter say two of his major inspirations were Carl Kolchak and architect David Vincent from The Invaders. I had always thought there was something familiar about The X-Files! Maybe Chris Carter is my vote for coolest. :)
If I remember correctly they offered Darren McGavin a chance to reprise Carl in an X-Files episode but he declined. They later created the character Arthur Dale to get him on the show.
