I just saw this for the first time and it was pretty enjoyable. One thing that bothered was how the police or politicians got Kolchak's girlfriend to leave town.
What did they do to make her leave? Didn't she have any loyalty to him? Did they threaten her or something? Did I hear they say something about her being an undesirable for the town? In LV, they'd have to ask everyone to leave.
It is assumed that she is a lady of the evening, or was at some point. They obviously threatened to trump up some charges against her, or "review" some old charges. So she left. They didn't want her around with the truth, same with Kolchak. They wouldn't need to ask everyone to leave, just the ones who knew the truth about the killings.
Actually this isn't really incidental to the whole story. In Darren McGavin's opinion, that was the main point of the movie (and the Night Strangler) bureaucratic nincompoopery of the authorities (and the media in the case of Strangler). The suits were pretty much ineffective the whole way through and then destroy other people to save face. That's why he was disappointed about the series at moved away from this underlying rationale and simply became a monster of the week show. Pretty soon you run out of monsters.

Another comparison to x-files then: monster of the week vs conspiracy (or ark) stories.
With out getting into weather one approach is better than the other (different strokes and all). Having just watched the DVD i do have to say that i don't think thay did a really good job in setting up the conspiracy angle. Frankly it came across like the "evil conspiracy" stuff the authorities were doing was because...well because that's what the MAN dose. Take the disparing of kochak’s girl friend, why what’s the point of it?
Basically this movie showed that sometimes people care more about their reputation, careers than standing up for their friends. Doing this in the TV show became very boring because you would think that at least some people would have the nerve to outsmart these crooked authorities and let the truth be known. It would have made it so interesting to know that at least some people did know the truth. They could have had it happen that in one place the truth is told, but news media in other areas would refuse to air/print it.
