Is Marcia Rodd trying to do Liza Minelli in this?

Marcia Rodd sounds (and looks) like someone who is trying their very best to imitate Liza Minelli in this film, and I find it exceedingly annoying. Her voice tone, word emphasis, mannerisms, all of it. Maybe she was hired as a Poor Man's Liza because they couldn't get the real one. I'm only about 20 minutes in and I hope to keep watching it if she doesn't irritate me too much. I feel like everyone is shouting and trying too hard, or maybe it's just that the script doesn't meet the level of the talent, but it seems like something doesn't match up in this film.

Just tuned in and I thought it was Minelli also at first glance!

I'm watching this for the first time, and think the lead actress is channeling Liza.

Quirky film so far...

agree!

reply

OH my Gosh she's still shouting, but it was worth sitting through for that scene with Donald Sutherland as the 'minister.' That was hilarious.

Yes! The monologues are absolutely brilliant quirky and hilarious! Donald Sutherland's sermon is one I won't forget. Glad I saw this little gem of a film. Black comedy very well done.

reply

I loved this also! Very quirky, not for everyone, but the writing was brilliant.

I'm with the OP 100%.

From the IMDB rating I expected something great, but that woman is so annoying, the first 20-30 minutes of the film were literally torture to watch. It didn't help that nothing really happens during that time.

Maybe some day I'll watch the rest, and find out what you all seem to like about this flick, but not anytime soon.

Minelli had only done two major movies at this point, not enough for her performances to have invaded the population's consciousness. We all knew who she was, but she wasn't yet LIZA WITH A Z. Marcia Rodd had been in the theater for quite some time.

reply

yeah this is before Cabaret, Marcia is a bit over the top but it plays well against Elliots subdued performance (hes amazing)

reply

Liza Minnelli is the poor man's Liza Minnelli.

reply

I'm 10 minutes in and I don't think I can listen to her much longer.
