For Those Who Liked This Movie...

...can you recommend some other films that a fan might enjoy? Given that IMDB's recommendations are (as yet) pretty awful...

Somebody mentioned The Producers in another thread. That makes sense to me. I'd personally recommend M.A.S.H. (possibly related to the fact that both Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland were in that one too).

I suppose then, that this is a call for suggestions of black, absurdist comedy...

reply

Just watched it the other day. Fantastic! The monologues are priceless and Arkin had me rolling.
other black comedies that come to mind are Harold & Maude, Wheres Poppa, feiffer's Carnal Knowledge, Catch-22.

reply

Deffinitely WHERES POPPA!
its got the same bizarre sense of humor and that 70ies feeling with great actors and a message.

California Split with Elliot Gould and George Segal, fantastic movie. Don't know if it's available on DVD or not

that does sound way good.

"It's for the pain. Rarely touch the stuff...Can I have another?"

Dr. Strangelove and Where's Poppa come to mind. Carnal Knowledge is the companion piece to Little Murders, a black "comedy of manners" perhaps, but the flipside to Little, in that it is a bleak drama of an empty man who is as shattered as the protagonist of Murders at the end.

reply

I just watched Carnal Knowledge after Kettnethstruck and jonchopwood's recommendations - great movie! Not as good as Little Murders in my opinion but still very funny and well worth the watch. California Split was mentioned by another poster above - also a brilliant movie, one of Altman's best. Still trying to get my hands on Where's Poppa. Thanks!

I liked Getting Straight a 1970 socio-political dark comedy with Elliot Gould and Candice Bergen. Bergen was a stunning 23 year-old model with her face on dozens of magazine covers at the time the movie was filmed. Her character is at wits end dealing with Gould's character and his total lack of commitment to the relationship. It's mostly an extended lovers spat between Gould and Bergen during a campus sit-in that ultimately erupts into full blown riot. Their arguments seem to escalate along with the turmoil surrounding them. It has tons of social commentary that still rings true today. Although some scenes are slightly disjointed and the acting is often over the top it's nonetheless entertaining with a solid quirkiness rarely seen in today's feature films. It's an underrated film but it deserves to be seen.

Just watched Getting Straight tonight - I loved it! Thanks so much for the recommendation! I still can't get my hands on Where's Poppa...

I came to recommend Where's Poppa as well. Since that's already been mentioned, I'll suggest The Knack and How to Get It.

Maybe Vampire's Kiss, too.

The Bed Sitting Room. Very different, but a similar vibe.

- The Loved One http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059410/
(Jonathan Winters in duel roles as a slick televangelist and the owner of a pet cemetery. Also showcases John Gielgud coming out of the closet, and James Coburn as a Beatles-hating customs agent)

- The Ruling Class http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069198/
(Peter O'Toole as an English lord who thinks he's the Lord Jesus Christ)

- The Americanization of Emily http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057840/
(D-Day was just a PUBLICITY STUNT!!!????)

(Phil Hartman gives his greatest performance as a nephew who can't wait for his rich old uncle Kirk Douglas to die)

- Unfaithfully Yours http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040919/
(I hear the Dudley Moore remake was good, but I like this original tale of a conductor who dreams up different ways to murder his unfaithful wife)

I'd like to mention Network (1972) which I believe won best screenplay at the Oscars back in the day, a truly amazing film with some amazing monologues.

loved little murders. concur with "the president's analyst". if you like absurdist comedy like those films you should check out bertrand blier's "buffet froid" with gerard depardieu which is amazing. also one should see "watermelon man", if you like elliott gould-"the long goodbye" and "california split".

reply

Network was made in 1976.
