Porsche 914 in the race
Was it competitive in its class?
shareA 914/6 won his class ( and was sixth overall ) at Le Mans 24 H race in 1970.
Very competitive I'll say!
Yes, but then again only 7 cars finished the race. :)
shareActually 16 cars were running at the end but only 7 were "classified" due to some rule about completing a certain number or percentage of laps. There were also 9 "non-classified" finishers including the camera car which makes 16 cars. There were however 35 cars that were not running at the end of the 24 hours and were classified as "did not finish".

Thats very cool, orly77. I wonder if you have read a book "My Racing Life" by Derek Bell & Alan Henry. He tells of an incident during the making of the film when Bell & another professional are training McQueen to drive the 917's at close to racing speeds. Steve was in one of 3 917's but the 2 pro's didn't think SM was trying hard enough. So they sandwiched him and forced him to drive VERY fast, at near racing speeds, through the corner that the previous years death scene that opened the movie happened. It scared the wits out of McQueen who immediately stopped at the pits, got out, spent some moments getting a normal colour back in his skin, then berated the hell out of Bell & his mate, who were having a bit of a laugh about it.
Name two ways of getting them flowing, Watson.
The mate of Derek Bell and driver of the second "Sandwiching"-Porsche 917, was Jo Siffert, who was really a good Friend of Steve Mcqueen and a Porsche-Works-Driver in the Early 1970´s.
Jo Siffert died at the "Race of Champions" at Brands Hatch on October, 25th, 1971.
Best Regards, Greg.
