Did McQueen consider the Ferrari 512's?

Does anyone have any info about how Steve came to selecting the 917's over the 512's? Unless I've got wrong info, all 3 John Wyer Gulf 917's did not finish the 1970 race & in 1971, 2 expierd & one, number 19 driven by Muller and Atwood finished second. One out of six is a terrible record.

Name two ways of getting them flowing, Watson.

The 3 John Wyer Gulf 917's and the 4 Ferrari team cars did not finish the race.
Most of them didnt even last very long.

p.s. The very close ending to the film is based partially on what happened at the 1969 Le Mans 24 Hour race.
