Unsportsman driving??

During the last lap of the race, it appears to me that McQueens car is doing some serious barging and some unsportsman like driving. ie. turning into a competitor when driving in a straight line.....

Anyone else agree?

Argy-bargy was SOP in 70's sportscar racing...a little like it is in NASCAR today. What kills me in the movie (as in all Hollywood racing movies) is when a driver is shown to suddenly slam his foot down on the throttle when he is neck & neck with another car. Yeah, like he wasn't flat out already!

Maybe not. If I remember, he was drafting the 1st place Gulf 917, thus would not have needed to apply full throttle to match the 1st place cars speed. It looked to me like McQueen's character was doing just as his team boss had requested...make sure that Porsche won, even if it meant sacrificing his own chances of the first place slot. The two Porsche cars looked to be driving as a team just enough to either (in SM's case) out drag the 512, or put it out of track position, thus compromising it's track speed and making any last grasp victory move near impossible.

To which 'dude' are you referring?

Of course his character was doing that. The team boss told him to win the race. He was making sure a faster car/driver didn't get to his team mate.

I believe a movie about a particular subject can be called truly great when the real (in this case,) race car drivers & their teams, say it's great.

"the last 15 minutes of this film is a disaster". Too true. And such a pity. This could have been such a fantastic flick, worthy of derision to NO-ONE. However, what will be forever, what we are left with is very laughable in fact. The absolutely gorgeous air cooled 917 & her dueling partner, the stunning breathtaking 512 had vastly different top speeds. The Porsche was geared to 240 mph (and as a test was once geared to 249 mph) whereas the Ferrari could only acheive 220 mph (355 kmh).

So then, how could Stahlers car be pushing Larry the leader & his tail gunner, Delaney? Ludicrous. The scenario seemed to be to me, that Wilsons car was the slowest, the Fazz was the quickest but being blocked & shouldered barged by the second quickest, Michael. Why didn't Larry let the faster car of Delaney through? They were in the same team. Was Larry's slow old slug favoured by the team manager? Too stupid. There was not in any real life Sports Car racing, a situation where such idiocy would happen. It never will. There is too much riding on the outcome - being the decision people may make when choosing between a Ferrari or a Porsche!

37 years ago, 'Follywood' stepped in &, I suspect, a fat little cigar chomping no nothing bully with too much money, ruined a potentially timeless piece of art.

It still happens.

ps; Some people forget or don't realize, this race, & Sports Car racing, is about the manufacturers - not the drivers name.
