I love how "real" this movie is

New York isn't prettified. It's not glamorous or exotic - except that scene of the two Frogs eating that scrumptious dinner. It's f'g freezing, it's dive bars, and burning piles of garbage, it's lowlife scumbag junkies getting manhandled. And the way it's shot only adds to that; it's so gritty. I love this movie.

Gritty, yes, but in a really dumbed down way. I don't expect your local cops to be super sleuths but those guys were really terrible at their jobs. It's not like that Frenchy was some kind of super syndicate guy with connections like octopus tentacles. The director did make one thing clear in his commentary, which I believe should have been worked out in the closing text messages, that there were significant payoffs that were doled out. I mean, how else would that older guy escape the police dragnet? Supposedly, he was an ex-French resistance fighter from WWII but trapped is trapped for crying out loud.

Anyhow, this movie, in many ways reminded me of "Bullitt" but that movie did gritty as well without less of a goofy storyline (not by much though), a much better car chase and the most important, likable characters.

This is probably the most over rated movie that I have seen in the last 5 years.

Right, but there's another thread about how dumb Popeye and Cloudy were. They were street cops, busting junkies and tossing bars. They were never involved in the big score.
