Can you just eat a mussel like that?

In Marseilles, right when they're about to meet that famous dude at the castle or whatever, Frog 1 reaches into a little tidal pool, pulls out a mussel, slices it open and starts eating it.

Can you really just do that? Raw mussel? And does it taste good? Salty from the sea?

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Physically you can, of course. But you shouldn't. When mussels are boiled, if the shells don't open it means they are not safe to eat, so you chuck them away unless you are willing to take a risk of severe food poisoning. I know this because my sister once did a cookery course and she told me.
But back in the 70s, when there was a lot less of marine pollution and people certainly were virtually ignorant of its dangers, maybe it was all right to eat raw seafood.
And nowadays the Japanese still eat raw fish -Sushi. Don't they?
I wouldn't.

I think he is eating an oyster. They are nearly always eaten raw (and surprisingly tasty). Mussels are nearly always cooked before being served.

reply

It was either a sea urchin or an oyster. I thought it was the former. Either of these can be taken from the water and opened fresh with a penknife.

reply

Sea urchins are covered with long spines they are not bivalves that can be split with a knife.

reply

Yes but a sea urchin can be cut open enabling the user to dig the urchin out altho I didn't know they could be eaten raw.
