I have a special edition dvd version with English subtitles which are actually excellent. However, when a song comes on, the subtitles stop. I have seen subtitles of lyrics in other musical films. Why not this one? Is it a copyright issue or something else?
That's interesting that the song subtitles arent on your DVD...because I have a DVD (regular edition) that has the song subtitles...and I am watching it on HBO right now, and they have them there too
Can you let me know which of the DVD editions has subtitles on the songs? That's the one I'll buy from Amazon--I'm hard of hearing and need those subtitles. Thanks!
To be honest, I bought it so long ago that I dont remember where I got it...I might have gotten it from Columbia House or something. I'll take a look at the cover and see if I can figure it out from there
My temple sisterhood had a fundraiser last night: Fiddler on the Roof Singalong & Barbecue. We charged for the food only, not the film. Worked on & publicized it for months. Made up prop bags with stuff for each song, Rocky Horror-style. Signs to be waved before each song so the audience could get out the right prop. Big fancy fake wedding cake to serve at intermission (got a real cake at Costco). Raffles, door prizes, strolling violinist, costume contest; got a pretty large crowd.
Just as we were about to show the brand new dvd and I got up to explain about the props and signs, the director of the event informs me that there were subtitles for everything but the songs. I almost bit off the microphone.
I told the crowd this puzzling news and said, well, we all know the words, so just sing along. Of course, they only knew some of the words, but it was okay. Everyone said they had a great time, but it was kind of mortifying. Even if we had known ahead of time and printed out the lyrics, we couldn't have read them in the dark.
I wish I had read this post last week. Or two months ago.
Several years ago I asked this question and have just read the answers for the first time. I have further news, however, which I hope will be helpful. Although I still do not have an adequate answer for why everything in the film is subtitled except the songs, the same unfortunately is true on the Bluray version I bought just last week. In fact I need to ask all the Bluray buyers if they have noticed a less than adequate transfer fuzziness? My old regular version is clearer than the Bluray. How is this possible? Should I return this one for a refund? Did MGM somehow blow the re-release or use some outdated source for the copying. In fact I've seen bootleg copies of films with a clearer picture. (I don't buy them myself but confiscate them from employees whenever I detect a piracy.)
