who is 'that man'?

when Tevye's youngest daughter tries to explain her affection for the Russian lad, and Tevye rebuffs her appeal and< "you must remember who you are.....and(as he points a finger), who that man is."

just exactly what does "that" mean in the context?
Does Tevye mean that any Christian Russian is complcit in a Pogrom?

or does it simply mean that "that" means not one of the chosen?

a wonderful piece of ambiguity in a wonderful film.

He's saying he's not Jewish, not that he's anti-Semitic.

reply

'That man' is a gentile and is not to be part of their community.

reply

And not just a Gentile, but most likely a Christian which stands for a stumbling block and associated with persecution. See Golda's reaction when she sees the icon at the Orthodox Church. It's like somebody punched her.

reply

It just has to do with his not being Jewish (one of the chosen people). Some sentiment still stands today among different religions, how Christians should stay with Christians, Jewish with Jewish, etc. It even goes for certain ethnicities as well.

she looks at it like it creeps her out...and frankly, it is rather creepy, even to me as a Catholic. it isnt well done or well cared for. plus, there is a religious ban against 'all graven images' for them, so a picture of a person would be something she would avoid looking at. (though, i find it very odd that their synogoge has so many pictures all over the walls.)

"when Tevye's youngest daughter tries to explain her affection for the Russian lad,..."

2 things here:

a) Chava is Tevye's MIDDLE daughter; not his youngest.

b) Tevye, Chava, & the rest of the Jewish community of Anatekva are all Russian too.

I'm reminded of Chiam Potok's novel "My Name is Asher Lev".
In this novel, the young protagonist, a gifted artist, learns to draw by copying pictures of Jesus.
Asher's father is enraged, pointedly telling his son that THAT MAN (meaning Jesus) was responsible for the suffering of the Jewish people.

BTW, I'm Jewish and I don't believe that one whit. It was much later--after the Church was established (and fomented lies about the Jews)--that Christian anti-Semeiism rose.

Yes, & then when Islam came along, Jews suffered Muslim anti-semitism.

What most of you seem to forget is that the situation with the Jews in Russia at the time wasn't a lot better than Germany in the 2nd world war. Hence the fact that they get thrown out at the end of the Film

Yes, but, Jewish people always had it bad throughout its 2000 year exile from Israel. And when Communism took over Russia, & all the other countries which came under what would be known as the Soviet Union, they could not practice their Judaism, because religion became illegal.

Yes I know I was just saying that this is why he refers to him as "That Man" in the way that he does.

reply

Yes, there was a lot of hostility between people of different religions, back in those days.

There still is.

True, but, in many places, there is more freedom of religion, etc.

"Asher Lev" was a great book. Not only did he depict Jesus, but drew his mother as a crucifix and implying that Asher and his Father had 'crucified' her between her husbands work and Asher's art.

reply

Tevye rolled with his own like many people choose to do.
