Is Tzeital a ringer for...

For years I've believed Tzeital was played by Barbra Streisand....the actress (Rosalind Harris) who it actually was must be a long-lost indentical twin of hers.

reply

Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only one who originally thought Babs was Tzeitl! I soon learned otherwise. I still think she would've made an excellent Tzeitl, but I think, for some reason or another, she has refused to play that part or take part in that musical.

reply

They look so much alike! I was just checking this website to see if they were somehow related I cant get over it

reply

I actually got into an argument about this w/ my cousin who is an orthodox rabbi. He insisted she was in the movie and I said, "You can't prove me wrong when it comes to Barbra because I know just about all there is to know and I know she wasn't in it at all!" Even though he's a rabbi and it was shabbos, I almost got him to bet money! Instead, we just called my aunt after shabbos ended because he said that he'd listen to her.

reply

Come on, I can see a passing resemblance between the two, but they don't look THAT much alike.

reply

I was thinking she looked like that wild and crazy winner Rebecca from the 1997 Spelling Bee.

Always thought she looked like Mayim Bialik.

reply

LOL. I was thinking, that must be Mayim Bialik's mom or something. Glad I'm not the only one.

After Funny Girl, Barbra would not have even considered playing anything other than the STAR of any movie. She would have played Tevye before lowering herself to a supporting role- which is what the part of Tzeitl is. Ms Barbra doesnt share the spotlight with anybody- never has and never will.

reply

Maybe that was why Barbra Streisand directed, co-wrote, co-produced and starred in "Yentl". a "Fiddler On The Roof" ripoff.

reply

Ripoff? Like Grease is a rippoff of Ben Hur or Argo is a ripoff of Mary Poppins or A Clockwork Orange is a ripoff of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.

reply

Both Yentl & The Fiddler On The Roof are about Orthodox Jews. That is why the poster regards Yentl as a ripoff. In all the examples you just cited, they are apples compared to oranges.

The story lines of Yentl & Fiddler maybe entirely different, but, the religious overtones are entirely the same, hence in this particular case, its apples compared other apples, as opposed to apples with oranges.

Her last 3 films PROVE that your words are biased nonsense.

If you thought Tseitel was played by Barbara Streisand, then let me be first to break to you that Motel wasn't played by Woody Allen.

reply

Lordy, people, the actress who played Tzeitel doesn't resemble Streisand at all! Do you really feel that a nose that's bigger than the one most Gentiles have is all it takes to make two women look "Identical"?

That's like saying all Asians look alike, or all black men look alike.

And Streisand was too old to play Tzeitel on screen by that point.

reply

I have to strike out for all Jewish girls here: they don't have Streisand noses. Only Barbie has one. (Love ya, Barb!)

"That's like saying all Asians look alike, or all black men look alike."

The honest truth is, members of an unfamiliar ethnicity look fairly similar. Especially Germans with their funny hats, of course, but also others.

A (white) friend of mine was dating this (black) girl (they were called Paul and Paula, for good measure), and she introduced him to her grandmother. Let's tune into the conversation:
Paula: "Grandmother, I'd like you to meet my boyfriend, Paul."
Paul: "Ma'am ..."
Grannie (abruptly): "I know him, you've already introduced us."
Paula: "No, erm ... that was my previous boyfriend ..."
(Wait for it ... drum roll ...)
Grannie (vexed): "Why you always dating white boys, Paula? They all look alike."

The honest truth. And a lesson to us all.

First, I consider myself a fair person, and I always try to see people as individuals and not "a group" based solely on race. With that said, even though I didn't think that the actress playing Tzeitel was Barbra Streisand, Rosalind Harris <definitely> looked like her. In fact, when I saw this movie again as an adult, I was shocked at how much she resembled Barbra and went searching for pictures of Harris as an older woman. (She doesn't look much like Babs anymore, but I still maintain that she did in the movie.)

reply

I really do not see Barbra Streidand when I see the actress that played Tzeital. I always thought one of my aunts kind of looked like Rosalind Harris though.

reply

I could see clearly Tseitel wasn't Streisand, but I'd agree, the resemblance is striking. And, as astutely observed above, the latter was too old in '71 to play Tseitel.

She was an absolute beauty, though. Motel was a lucky putz!!

wait...I never said or thought it was their noses or any one feature made them look so much alike. Both have very close-set eyes, high cheekbones and large, beautifully shaped mouths/lips. Rosalind Harris's mannerisms are also very much like Babs, at least here. And though its pushing it, she certainly coulda played 18-20 y.o., 30 yr old women do that sometimes. Paul Michael Glaser (Perchik) was the same age as Streisand and he's supposedly quite young here (Perchik just finished his education, and is not yet married).

reply

I laughed out loud when they showed a close-up of Rosalind Harris' eyes...it was like, "What happened? They got Streisand to do the close-up?" ;)

reply

I KNOW, right?!

reply

When I was little I thought it was Babs too.

LOL. I knew a lady that looked just like Tzeital so I guess she looked like B.S. too.

reply

They both look like and both played Fanny Brice. Barbra in "Funny Girl" and "Funny Lady" and Rosalind in "Cotton Club." That is the only resemblance to me.

Babs has had several different looks through the decades, but with hair held back with a scarf, these ladies look a lot alike. I think Rosalind Harris's face is a little thinner than Barbras.
