Topol's age in Fiddler On The Roof (36?)

Apologies in advance if this has been discussed before on another thread...

Was Topol only 36 when he acted in this film??!?
According to IMDB, Topol was born in 1935. So if the movie came out in about 1971 that means he would have been 36...
But I don't believe that!!! He looks a bit older than mid-thirties?!
I mean, I know they can do amazing things with make-up and stuff, but he was such a good actor and also I just can't imagine him going through hours of make-up just to look like that!!!
...If it IS make-up, then all I can say is 'good job'!!

I remember reading that they clipped seven white hairs from the director to put in Topol's eyebrows to make him seem older.
