Best Musical of All Time

This is by far the best musical of all time. Topol is amazing in this and the music is extraordinary.

As wonderful as this film happens to be it does not compare artistically to the grand movies made by MGM and the Arthur Freed Unit. In the early 1950s, the Freed unit possessed the finest orchestral band in the world not to mention the talents of virtually every important singer, dancer, and composer: Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Leslie Caron, Debbie Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, the list is almost endless. I've seen virtual ever MGM musical more than once. Fiddler can easily stand with them it is that good. Claiming anything is the best is always tough...I happen to like An American In Paris, Singing in the Rain, and Gigi but there are many others comparably wonderful. Is Fiddler the best musical ever? I saw the play on Broadway in the 1960s and it was grand! The movie is wonderful but the best musical? Hard to say.

reply

I would say it's in the top ten easily.

And what appears to be an often over-looked point is just how theatrical (in terms of theatrical devices) the entire piece is, perhaps the most theatrical of all musicals.

Fiddler and West Side Story are certainly two of the most unique musicals plays ever.

You have good taste. It's at least one of the top five movie musicals. I'd be hard pressed to pick one of the five as the best of all.

reply

Fiddler is great. I think top five. Once you pick top five, how can one pick no. 1? Personally, I'll pick My Fair Lady, Oliver, Chicago, Gigi, and Fiddler.

reply

"Chicago"???!!! Yikes!!!

reply

I liked it. Also, I put a lot of emphasis on an Oscar. Chicago did win for Best Picture.

I know that you liked Carousel. It's my favorite too. I didn't put it in my top five because I know most people would disagree. The movie version was not that well received.

reply

The fact that AMPAS went totally berserk and gave it awards means nothing to me. Anyway, your other selections are far better.

"Carousel" has gained in popularity over the years, but regardless of its popularity, it's the greatest film musical of all time.

Four of those make sense, but "Anchors Aweigh"?

reply

In the top 20? Perhaps. The best musical of all time? Not by any stretch.

reply

It's very difficult to find the "greatest" film in ANY genre

But the musical is my FAVORITE genre, and FOTR is definitely one of my favorites.
There are others too: SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, GIGI, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, etc.

reply

It's my favorite musical, and partly because it isn't people dancing in beautiful gowns under crystal chandeliers. It's people living real life, like my family and ancestors lived, but it's still beautiful and heart-felt. I'm so glad the cast Topol. He was perfect in the role. (I'm not Jewish. Appalachian)

West Side Story

How about The Sound of Music, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, Grease and Cinderella (with Brandy)?

The Phantom of the Opera.

If you love Mary and Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make your signature!

reply

I haven't seen the movie adaptation, but as a pure musical it's definitely one of the greats.

reply

If you haven't seen the movie, then watch it tonite.

reply

Oh, I love Fiddler on the roof a lot, but It's so difficult to classify musicals..
I think my number 1 must be My Fair Lady, Fiddler could easily come second. But I loved, loved Moulin Rouge, at least as much. I really liked Hello Dolly, but not more than Fiddler or MR. Chicago is very good but not my favourite...actually, I love Richard Gere but I didn't like his singing. and so it goes
