What happened to Tevye?

I am confused about after the film ends. Tevye mentions he will be sailing to New York with Golde but in the Mitchell Bard book,After Anatevka, Tevye, Golde and his 3 youngest daughters move to a kibbutz in then Palestine. Which is the generally accepted version? I also read somewhere that Golde dies enroute to America. Fans of the film are curious about what happened? How did the family afford to pay the steep steamship cost to sail to America?

From what I've read online, the original story was much sadder than the musical version. I read that Golde & Motel both die; that Chava's Christian husband abused her (the lines "he'll beat you every night," in Matchmaker was obviously a shout-out to that), so its possible that Tevye & family went to Palestine, rather than the USA.
