Which version should I buy?

Could somebody please help me figure out the different versions of FOTR at Amazon? They have at least 15 or more, many with the same photo, but prices all over the place. It looks like over the years, a couple of "special editions" were available. I don't have Blue Ray. I'm just looking for a very good quality, plain 'no frills' movie although I do love movies with the director's, etc. commentaries, behind the scenes, etc. but I don't care about a lot of fancy packaging, photos, etc. This is one of my favorite movies and I got a gift certificate for Christmas, but I am totally confused when I go to Amazon. If this is available on Criterion, I would love that but probably can't afford it.

I would suggest either the Special Edition or the 40th Anniversary release, the quality will be the same and the extras (including commentaries, behind the scenes docs etc) should be the same and the prices on Amazon and/or third party sellers are pretty low. There is no Criterion release at the moment.

On a personal note, you might, at some point, want to seriously condider a move up to Bluray. Players are quite cheap now and the difference in quality from SD DVD is amazing.
