pig

Being a Jew of Russian descent I love this movie! It is truly the story of my family. In the early 20th century my family left Russia as soon as the pogroms started. But I digress I noticed in the scene where Tevye is filling the milk can that he has a pig. This would never happen in a Jewish religious household. Did anyone else notice and is there an explanation for Tevye having a pig?

I have to watch the movie again to see this. Very interesting observation.

That wasn't Tevye's farm. He was making a milk delivery.

Yes, nuyorican-2 is right about that. Also, notice how Tevye shoos away the pig with disgust.

Thank you both it was a question that bothered me.

He was delivering to a customers house at the time--peasant would also buy from him, not just Jews. However, I Did notice that in Tevye's barn, as he was leaving town and saying goodbye to the animals, there was a pig rooting in the straw in the back, and I'm thinking, WTF?? Either it slipped by the director, OR the Russian who bought the farm (Tevye mentions him, "Farmer so-and-so is a good man") went ahead and brought over his pig since he'd just bought the place.

I think that was a goat at the end of the movie rooting in the straw, not a pig. Goats give milk like cows do.
