If another actor was chosen instead of Sean Connery

After George Lazenby left, United Artists were considering other actors to play Bond, among those considered were American actors Clint Eastwood, Robert Wagner, Brett Hasley, John Gavin and Adam West while non-American actors like Roger Moore, Michael Gambon, and unknown Guy Peters were thrown into the mix. Roger Moore was unavailable due to filming commitments with the show "The Persauders", Gambon had stated he was in terrible shape, Eastwood, Wagner and West had all stated that Bond should be an Englishman and Guy Peters had screen tested the role. Gavin had accepted the role, however UA were unhappy with this casting and Sean Connery was persuaded back to the role with a bigger salary.

Had an American actor, or another actor was hired after Lazenby, the series would have likely sunk and it was good that Connery was brought back one more time in what was a campy mediocre movie. He even paved the way for a new actor to come in afterwards with a new tone for the series.

Casting an American might have been worse but Connery did not work either. He looked out of shape and aged quite badly since YOLT. Apparently he spent more time on the Vegas golf courses than he did on set and it showed.

‘Cause, God knows, being on the links won’t give him the exercise of being on the movie set.

Him spending more time on the golf course was a reference to his commitment to the role, he looked aloof, like he wanted to be somewhere else. Appreciate the sarcasm, though.
