Is it just me or did Connery seem out of shape in this one?
He seems heavier and not as suave as Bond in his earlier films.

shareThis is Connery at his worst. He was better in Never Say Never Again. I mean, as bad as that film is, at least Connery took it seriously.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
They didn't trim his eyebrows for this one, which made him look more brutish.
shareIs that what it was? I can't take my eyes off the bad hairpiece.
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
He looks extremely old in DAF for some reason. Sean was extremely handsome early in his career, and just as handsome for an old man later on, but in the middle, something happened to him that makes him look.. shoddy. He makes Roger Moore look like a teenager in the next movie even though Moore was older than Connery. (Moore would of course go on to have the same effect on Dalton).
shareWhat do you mean by Moore having the same effect on Dalton? Moore was 58 when he retired, so that makes sense. x) Otherwise I totally agree with you. Moore looks so young in LALD, despite being years older than Connery...
shareConnery was legitimately fat in DAF. I think the comment about him not caring is spot on. After OHMSS, the higher-ups wanted Connery back for DAF and were paying him $1 million + % of profits which was a ridic amount back in '71 and I think more than most film stars earnt back then. He looked terrible in DAF. Connery had no reason to look good for the role because he was getting it no matter what. I think this was a mistake on the part of the producers, they should have whipped him into shape, dyed his hair and given him a shorter haircut.
I know that Bonds are fantasy films but I just couldn't buy into the women throwing themselves at Bond when he looked this bad. Connery was no longer believable as the womanizing superspy.
Rofl, come on he didn't look that bad.

It's obvious in the scenes where his shirt is off that he has gained weight and isn't in the usual Bond shape. Today this wouldn't happen. If the star didn't get himself into shape the studio would make him before filming...
shareI thought he kind of looked like Richard Nixon in this!
"No man is just a number"
Actually more like Woody Allen (without the glasses).
he was only 40 when they filmed but looked more like 50
shareWell. It has to do with genes you know! I bet Connery looked big for his age as a boy too.
shareWow only 40.
share40???? Looks much older. It's pretty obvious he didn't give a damn at this point. He only did this because his replacement (George Lazenby) didn't work out. I'm guessing they paid him a LOT to do this. The poor guy looks miserable.
shareI don't think he looks miserable at all. He gives a very relaxed and confident performance and appears to embrace the satirical nature of this film.
share3 years later, in "Zardoz"(1974) he does the whole movie in a red diaper. Body looked OK there -- but not much different from Diamonds Are Forever.
Connery was a professional bodybuilder -- without steroids -- in his pre-movie days and muscle does start to turn to fat eventually. Yes, he did shirtless scenes 12 years later in Never Say Never Again" that were marginally better, but I suppose he really CARED about that movie -- his own production pitted AGAINST the Saltzman/Broccoli people he had grown to hate earlier. Maybe he worked out and lost some weight for that one.
That said, I think that Sean Connery still looked like what he was in Diamonds Are Forever -- a genuine movie star, big ,strapping and handsome even with the "flaws." It was great to get him back as Bond. and we thought that was going to be the end of that. Wrong.

It's really pretty amazing how much he aged between You Only Live Twice and this. It's like when he lost the role he just let himself go, and when he got it back he didn't bother to sort himself out.
They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold
