If you could modify DAF, what would you do ?

I like this film, but I got to agree that some details spoiled the whole thing.
If I could change the movie, here what I'd do :

- Don't make Tiffany go dumb and stupid halfway through the movie, and keep her mysterious and strong
- Don't act like if "James Bond" is a famous comic strip character. Don't make Tiffany say "Oh my god ! You just killed James Bond !!!".
- Go on with Lazenby again, or put Connery on a diet before shooting.
- Don't make Blofeld come back, or if he does let him be a serious, bald and deadly villain.
- Make it a revenge story following Tracy's death in the previous film.

....And there we got the perfect Bond.

Eliminate the few moments of juvenile humor.
Explain the death of Lana Wood's character better.
Keep the Tiffany Case character tough throughout.
Either change Blofeld's death to something definitive or have him escape altogether.

Nothing....it was perfect. My favorite Bond film.

 The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news. 

I agree. I don't know what's wrong with these people. Diamonds are Forever is a good movie. It's like these people don't know how to have fun watching movies today.

I feel there's a lot wrong with this film, but for starters:

-Get Connery in shape. He looks awful for a 40 year old.
-Remove most of the campy tone and make Bond angry and serious about going after Blofeld. It feels that his anger towards Blofeld for killing his wife is literally turned off after the opening title sequence.
-Make Jill St Jon take some acting lessons.
-Get rid of that ridiculous cheap looking moon car chase.

Get Lazenby back for a 2nd film (by any means)

Re-cast Tiffany Case

Make ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE Connery's last Bond film, and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Roger Moore's first.

Have Tiffany grab a machine gun and start blasting bad guys at the end.

Have Bond hold Blofeld's escape pod over an open flame and roast him like a marshmallow.

Have Leonard Barr do his wacky novelty dance.

Redo the part where the guy says, "Cai...Cai...Cairo!"

Fire Guy Hamilton so we could have a serious, revenge Bond flick.

Bring back Donald Pleasence as Blofeld.

Make Tiffany Case like her bad ass book counterpart.

Have the Spangled Mob smuggling diamonds like in the book with Bond shooting down the helicopter at the end.

You mean Telly savalas, but only if Lazenby had returned. Pleasance only for Connery.

Hell, I'd just reshoot the whole thing, and recast everyone except for Connery and St. John ... maybe give the aging Bruce Cabot of King Kong fame a bigger role.

And I wouldn't make S.P.E.C.T.R.E. the enemy, but keep it the Russians as per Ian Flemming's authorship.

If i could modify it, i would actually throw the entire script in the trash and find the original script, which was made during the filming of OHMMS and then give Lazenby a second chance, because Diamonds Are Forever was originally meant to be "OHMMS Part 2", where they even had planed to show the death of Tracy before the titles, so you would be fully aware about what the entire movie was going to be about: Vengeance.

They could've re-filmed the death scene with a different actor. That was one of the options originally.

-Bring back Lazenby for a second film
- Make it have a more serious tone, as Bond pursues Blofeld for killing Tracey (DAF is the biggest missed opportunity of the series )
- Get rid of all the campy humour, and Blofeld in drag
- Bring back Peter Hunt as director. Only Guy Hamilton movie I'd say that was really good was Goldfinger
- Give Blofeld a more definitive and confirmed death. Considering we didn't see him again in the official series til FYEO

I'd go with everything the OP lists. I've always wondered how two minor smugglers are faniliar with MI6 personnel

Make Wint & Kidd believable killers instead of a couple of camp queens Bambi and Thumper are more frightening than those two.

When the Mustang goes into the alley on two wheels, make sure it comes out on the sme two wheels

Re. the alley scene: I wonder if you could take the footage inside the alley with the ramp, mirror-reverse the image, then use CGI to re-reverse the lettering on the walls/police car...then of course cut out the 'fixed it' shot of Bond and Tiffany as they apparently go from leaning one side to the other.

And while you're at it, CGI out the moon buggy wheel bouncing past the rolled security car.

Also make it Roger Moore's first Bond picture. It already feels like a Roger Moore Bond picture.
