science-fiction?

I see this movie is labeled under science-fiction. but I'm not sure why. It takes place in a vaguely futuristic landscape, but it more so just looked like a more rundown version of the 1970s.
The only possible sci-fi aspect of it was Alex's treatment, but even that is pushing it. I think this movie is about as sci-fi as The Warriors. Both are more so about gang-related crime in slightly futuristic 1970s. But one is regarded as a science fiction classic, the other a crime/action classic. While not so much in themes, the two are very much alike in esthetic.

It was science fiction in 1971 inasmuch that the events dealt with the problems of then-future delinquents getting out of control and threatening society in a way that was a warped extension of early 70s life in the UK.

The fashions, decor and debased culture were disturbing futures to audiences in '71.

REAL science fiction fantasy at the time.

I think its labelled that partially because its hard to assign a genre to this movie. Dark comedy? Straight drama? Since "dystopian" isnt a common genre grouping, i think thats why its put under sci fi

It's kinda sorta science fiction.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and / or doesn't.

It takes place in the future and deals with a fictional science. Therefore science-fiction.
