Malcom McDowell

According to the trivia section:

McDowell saw the film and was so disgusted by the character he created, he swore to never do anything like his character in this film again.

Then he goes and makes the utterly disgusting and sick movie Caligula. Who is he kidding? I've seen some of the *beep* that McDowell has lowered himself to making. It's either for a paycheck or he just doesn't care how he looks. Maybe both. Pretty sad for such a great actor that gave such a great performance in A Clockwork Orange. How can he even look at Caligula and not be ashamed? I've known directors and actors that took part in sick disgusting projects and it ruined their reputation. They lost fans and friends. I have no respect for McDowell for making Caligula. Peter O'Toole said later that he had no idea porn would be in the film. So he didn't have a problem with the rest of the sick depraved *beep* in the movie?

The late Roger Ebert said it best in his review:

"Caligula" is sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash. If it is not the worst film I have ever seen, that makes it all the more shameful: People with talent allowed themselves to participate in this travesty. Disgusted and unspeakably depressed, I walked out of the film after two hours of its 170-minute length. That was on Saturday night, as a line of hundreds of people stretched down Lincoln Ave., waiting to pay $7.50 apiece to become eyewitnesses to shame.

He gave it zero stars and I don't blame him. To read full review:

Caligula is just a badly-made film with no redeeming factors. Cheap sets and bad historical anarchronisms, like having machinery in Roman Times! I found it more boring than offensive.

Apparantly when Mc Dowell and Helen Mirren first read the script together, Malc was so bemused by Guccoines' depraved film scene ideas that he was lying on the floor in hysterics, kicking his legs in the air at the sheer outrage that sprung from the directors' mind.

Caligula is underrated.
