And I was thinking how beautiful she looked laughing uncontrollably, letting loose, as opposed to her usual stilted style. I don't often think of Bergen as a great performer, but I was impressed with her acting ability in this particular scene. I don't think she was "under the influence" at all. Perhaps people potted up at the end of the day (not that the "hipper" movie stars would not have imbibed once in a while during the day in those sex and drugs days as Nicholson mentioned in Rolling Stone), but most working actors would find it not just unprofessional but dangerous to go on drugs during the actual shooting.
The TCM review shed this interesting light: "Off-screen, Nicholson, Garfunkel and Bergen shared a house for the Vancouver shoot, a 'tiny utopia,' in Bergen's words. 'Many of us had been friends before the shooting, and those of us who weren't became friends during it.' It was, by all accounts, a generous and supportive group of people and a happy set."
