Pot

Nicholson admitted in a recent Rolling Stones interview that he and cast members would occassionally smoke pot on the set of a few movies during the late 60s-70s. I think this is one of those movies. Candace is just laughing too hard in that scene. And Jack always has this "hazy" look.

And I was thinking how beautiful she looked laughing uncontrollably, letting loose, as opposed to her usual stilted style. I don't often think of Bergen as a great performer, but I was impressed with her acting ability in this particular scene. I don't think she was "under the influence" at all. Perhaps people potted up at the end of the day (not that the "hipper" movie stars would not have imbibed once in a while during the day in those sex and drugs days as Nicholson mentioned in Rolling Stone), but most working actors would find it not just unprofessional but dangerous to go on drugs during the actual shooting.

The TCM review shed this interesting light: "Off-screen, Nicholson, Garfunkel and Bergen shared a house for the Vancouver shoot, a 'tiny utopia,' in Bergen's words. 'Many of us had been friends before the shooting, and those of us who weren't became friends during it.' It was, by all accounts, a generous and supportive group of people and a happy set."

Interesting, but Jack always has that hazy look.

OK. She is stoned. There is just no other way. I am not criticizing the scene, but just watch it. About 29 minutes into the movie. Stoned laughter for sure. Funny.

I thought of Susan's laughter as being nervous, not just humorous,to the point of near hysteria having to sit between her 2 lovers and the strain this arrangement caused in her life. This is why I think the camera focused only on her and not the men. Just my opinion.

According to the TRIVIA section for Mike Nichols on this site, the director specifically asked the actors NOT to smoke pot during the production of CARNAL KNOWLEDGE since he felt it would dull their performances.

reply

Bergen laughing was great, so uninhibited, and Nichols just hangs the camera on her - wonderful Entrance scene for her, too.
