Amazing movie. Edge of seat thriller (spoilers)
The Andromeda Strain is a fantastic movie. A very tight edge of seat thriller dealing with an organism brought back from space/somewhere that leads to people dying nearly instantly as their blood is turned to powder in a minute or so due to a micro organism. The attention to scientific detail is much better than any other movie I've seen from the procedures established to the different levels with self seals and the remote equipment and few people all highly trained to the magnification factor attention to detail and others.
While no procedure/process/code can ever be perfect because of humans, there's also human error to factor in which happens here as well due to a crazy scientist who doesn't properly disclose how the red color affects her leading to a near catastrophic situation.
While all this is very good and true for 1971, today, no one needs to eyeball things as the computers do all the work and flag if they detect anything on their own. So this situation won't happen.
I loved how detailed their security process was and decontamination procedures. Additionally, they had fail safes but they were too strict imo. Other movies didn't do this well like my all time favorite - Stargate which had 0 regard for this at all except in episodes which dealt with this but done superficially. Still Stargate is amazing.
The acting, directing, plot and story were great as the doc is trying to find out why and does and saves them in the nick of time. Strangely some other tech behaved silly being scared and shocked and worried running away when they know the facility would explode and it was meaningless to run. Better screening would help here in future. I'm sure the Dr. Stone will review and fix things.
Another puzzling thing was how did the fighter pilot die despite flying 23,000 in the air above Piedmont? Wasn't the microorganism on the ground area near the satellite? It spreads via air so it is Piedmont area for sure but it's spread was slow given the soldiers at the start were atop the mountain near the city but didn't die yet despite 66 of 68 dying.
Overall, this was a fantastic movie. Some of the best of 1970s science movies. Truly a worth watch.
