shareI believe the dog's name was something like "Pac." And I haven't yet bought the DVD--I just vividly remember ordering the dog to "speak" to Longstreet over the phone.
shareit was Pax, which means peace. probably in Latin.

a couple years ago, the show reran in Canada...
and about 3 years ago there was a show on ABC featuring a blind police detective. unfortunately, he carried a gun. which took away any credibility it might have had.
Longstreet was not a detective but an insurance invesitgator. Also, in the very first episode filmed, "A World of Perfect Complicity", he did indeed carry and use a gun.
shareMinor correction: In "Perfect Complicity," Mike did indeed use a gun twice. The first time, he was practicing on the police firing range, with an official present. The second time, a criminal attacked him in a deserted garage, but Mike managed to get the guy's gun away from him and hold him at bay with it till the police arrived. At no time was he shown carrying a gun, merely using one, either under supervision or under dire circumstances.
Does anyone know the name of the ABC show that bakulanews mentioned, about a blind police detective? (And was that the American Broadcasting Company or the Australian Broadcasting Corporaton?)
It was an American show, Blind Justice, a 2005 mid-season replacement for NYPD Blue (both of which were created by Steven Bochco). The show was apparently well done. Some considered it unrealistic, but in general it seems to have been reasonably true to life (with the possible exception of the gun). It was not renewed, so only 13 episodes were produced (looks like at least some of them are currently available on YouTube).
What puzzles me is that the show was considered unique, with no parallels drawn to Longstreet (which had, admittedly, ended some 33 years previously).
Here's the Wikipedia write-up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Justice_(TV_series)
Pax was a white German Shepherd Dog. I always wanted a white GSD, but unfortunately, white does not conform to the GSD standard and it is not encouraged to breed them. I've got two black and tans now....Lex and Shea. Maybe I'll call my next one Pax? Until I saw this, I forgot the impact this show and dog had on me.
sharePax is the dog's name
shareIt's also ironic that he had a white shepherd because many dogs that are born white of various breeds including pit bulls, Great Danes, and Australian Shepherds have a tendency to be deaf. There are even rescue groups specifically for deaf dogs. Look up Deaf Dogs Rule. Surprisingly, this issue doesn't seem to run in white german shepherds. They are actually considered a separate breed in the UK now.
shareAs others have already said, the dog's name was Pax. When the dog is first introduced (in the pilot), with his name pronounced like "packs," Mike correctly identifies it as the Latin word for "peace," but then asks wouldn't that be pronounced "pahx"-- which is indeed correct for Latin pronunciation.
Unfortunately, though, in American English, "pahx" is also the pronunciation of "pox" (as in "smallpox" and "chicken pox") -- therefore the dog's name continues to be pronounced with a short A (like "packs").
