Does this bother anyone else? *Spoilers*

In Archie Bunker's Place, when Gloria comes to visit after Edith passes away, she tells Archie that Mike left her to join a commune. Mike could be a jerk at times, but I never thought he would leave his wife and child. It kinda ruined the character for me. Am I alone here?

reply

Meathead was always the villain of All in the Family. Archie was clearly the slightly flawed hero.

I'm not sure about the timeline, but it sounds like they were setting up the Gloria spinoff. The commune thing was lame. He was a college professor, why would he join a commune? Seems like he would have joined one before he met Gloria, if he was going to do that.

reply

join a commune - No, Mike was too materialistic and possessive to live that lifestyle.
leave his wife and child - Yes, Mike was self-centered and self-righteous. He would do his best to pay low alimony and child support.

Meathead was always a bloviating self important jerkoff. Of course he ran off to a starving and smelly hippy commune, it’s where he belonged.

any thoughts on the responses?

Isn’t that the declining years of the show? I don’t think they even play them on MeTV.
