So, what's the problem?

I haven't quite figured out why, in this movie anyways, it seems to be bad to be pledged to the devil. I mean, it sucked for Lucinda, but I'm not entirely sure if she actually was a devil child.

The thing is, Melissa was pledged to the devil, but she never had to kill anyone or do anything for that matter. All that happened was she was able to stay eternally youthful and control fire. Now her and Jodie are both pledged. Does that mean they just get to live together eternally? Where exactly does the terror come in?

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as the fly by.

'The terror' exists only in enduring this movie! Seriously though, what I find more interesting is that the issue gets confused by the title (which says 'Satan') AND Melissa (who says, if I remember, that she's 'possessed by the devil': the voice never introduces itself as the devil, or indeed anything evil (well, aside from that rejoicing-in-the-baying-of-dogs crack)...so maybe that's why the deal doesn't seem to have an evil side. Unless part of the curse is that she has to stay eternally on the walnut ranch! AAAIGHH!

reply

haha, that might just be it. A lifetime of walnut ranching!

Yea, I was really confused when that sweet female voice started talking, and then turned out to be the devil (apparently). I mean, there's no reason a woman can't be Satan, but she should at least introduce herself.

What I don't understand is why the hell did Lucinda start killing people suddenly? They never explain it at all it seems.

Duh: 'She's old, Jodie!' They don't know what they're doing half the time...
The funny thing about the female voice is it's obviously one's own voice one hears when 'Satan' speaks...heavy...

reply

Well I guess that also, if she ever had sex she'd start showing her age. I mean, why else did she turn into another gramma dried apple head after she and Jodie consummated their pause-laden love?

reply

never thought about that, but WHY does having sex turn her into an elderly woman? Wouldn't being chaste be something that someone who was possessed by God do, not someone possessed by the ultimate evil? After all, most religions aspouse chastity as being God-like(poor God, he must never get any!), and having sex, especially out of wedlock, is evil. So its a big, fat HUH?! Isn't it.

I think this has been touched on before, but the devil voice was Melissa's (and then Jody's) own voice, as if "the devil was already within" the whole time.

I think what will happen after the end of the movie is that the cycle will begin anew. Melissa saved her sister from dying (for supposedly all time until Melissa took her life -- we can see the moment of Melissa saying "Die, Witch!" as Melissa releasing her from her mortal coil), although Lucinda would continue to age indefinitely.

Now that Jody has pacted with the devil, Jody is now in control of Melissa's life, and Melissa will now age indefinitely, and she will probably go mad just as Lucinda did. Just because your body won't actually die doesn't mean that the whole thing just won't go stright down the toilet, especially the mind.

As far as who Luther and Molly are, I suspected that they are some sort of distant cousins, as "Strickland" is a pretty common name. Luther and Molly are obviously aware of Melissa, and in the unedited version, Molly is even supportive of Melissa having a relationship with Jody.

Are they trapped on the walnut ranch? Probably not. Melissa could have statyed there this whole time as she, as a woman, did not have the freedom to move about like modern women do. She also had that big expanse of land (once her actual parents passed on)with no one to work it until Luther and Molly showed up. Jody might have taken her back to Austin in his snazzy car (once the vomit was cleaned up).

Anyway, I'm now done with all my parentheticals. I really like this movie, although I will admit it had more interest for me when I thought that Don Henderson and Tom Laughlin were the same person. XD

I can't believe she did that to her sister though. It's like she kept her pact until something better came along.
