Underrated Musical

Scrooge came out just after the Oscar winning Oliver so always gets comparison. Both were enjoyable
Musicals but the acting in Oliver was better. Finney over-acted as a mean Scrooge.

In the past couple of days, I've watched Reginald Owen ('38), Alistair Sims ('51) and Patrick Stewart ('99).

After the '69 cartoon and the '71 or '72 with Sims again, Finney was my first live Scrooge. Next must have been Henry Winkler's adaptation.

I wouldn't see Owen or Sims until decades later.

I'm seeing his different approach. He is 'livelier' but I actually enjoy it.

Sims still stands as by far the best performance and version. Many of the scenes in the musical were where I saw many of the moments I recall (the stagecoach thru his hallway, Edith Evans, etc.)

This then leaves only George C. Scott's version for me to watch, tho I plan on viewing Magoo and Stingiest Man in Town ('74) as well.

I do know Scott's performance was the only thing I didn't like about his version.

Finney was very good. If you want to see hysterical overacting, check out Seymour Hicks in the 1913 version, available on YouTube. He toned it way down when he played the role again in 1935 but for some reason I don't like that version as much as several of the others.
