shareHer bluntness contrasted with his 'proper' upbringing. What's the deal??
shareI hated when she kept saying preppy and bullshxt
shareI saw this movie for the first time today, although I heard a lot about it when it came out and for a while thereafter. I was in college in 1970, and believe me, the character of Jenny was as preppy as they come. Where I went (large state university) she would have been a little sorority girl, perfectly matched with Oliver (despite the $$ difference).
shareI see a trend in the posts here. Many women did not like Jenny's character.
I think that McGraw looked AMAZING for her age, personally, but I do think her character was topical and not realistic. So did my mother.
The trend I see is that women with independent thinking skills find McGraw's character to be unrealistic. I think her character was how movie execs wanted to see smart and independent women "back then." The problem is that real women don't use vapid, automated responses with the people they love. In fact, this characteristic is one that I've only seen wealthy people use; I went to a rich college.
Irony.
The gene pool could use a little chlorine......
I do so agree. I felt she did not speak to him as anyone would to a loved one, especially not early in the relationship. It would work for me if she had such an attitude briefly, in order to attract his attention, but I don't think he would have pursued her for long in real life. I read the book in 1969 when I was about her age and I found her really offensive.
I also found her statement, "I've never deliberately hurt anyone in my life," too ridiculous given the way she treated him so cavalierly. All her efforts to make peace within the families and her desire for everyone to just get along are just not realistic character traits combined with such a snarky attitude.
It's a reaction against feminists. She is essentially an independent, intellegent, and successful woman, but the writers (men) made her a real bitch. I'm smart, independent, and successful. I'm also very sarcastic, but she continued to be a dead-pan *beep* throughout the movie.
It's the male idea of what a modern woman would be I guess.
There’s no one on IMDB I care enough for to use spell check- suck it grammar Nazis
I like the fact that she was independent, and intelligent and had a good job, interests, etc. but I still felt like she was a bitchy and irritating character.
i wish the ring had never come to me.
I think what the writer was going for in the character of Jenny was a no nonsense type. It was made during the era of women's lib so Jenny was portrayed as a strong woman who could take care of a man. She was irritating at times but I think that was the appeal for Oliver. She didn't take any crap from anyone.
