Definitely not one of the best Love Stories

Finally saw this because I think how this is one of the greatest romantic movies. I'll be honest I'm a bit of a romantic cynic in real life. Don't believe in love at first sight, or falling in love in just a day, or getting married after 3 months. Still some of my favorite movies are: The Notebook, Ever After, Love Actually.

Maybe this movie is just dated for me being born 15 years after it came out.

I hated that Jenny gave up her dream of going to Paris to get married to this rich jerk (I know it was the 70's, but that's he feminist in me)

But I hated Jenny even more. Such a rude arrogant girl (Guys always complain that woman go for jerks, but this movie proves that guys can somehow fall for jerky girls too)

So that was my biggest problem too unlikable lead characters make it hard for you care that they are falling in love.
Then Ali McGraw how the hell did she get an oscar nomination for this performance it was dreadful.

And don't even get me started on the famous line "Love means never having to say you're sorry"

I could not get emotionally invested in the movie and that is the only job of a romantic tale, so for that reason it failed in my book. I know many disagree.

I did not like this movie the first time I saw it but it's grown on my over the years. I guess more than anything I like the 'love transcends class' storyline. And I think that look by Oliver Barrett III at the end as he realizes he's too late to come in and save the day and reconcile with his son is so sad...

I disagree with your assessment of his Dad's look at the end. I thought the Dad looked crushed, not only because his son's wife had died but because he had lost his one great opportunity to make amends.

What made him a rich jerk, to you? He always seemed genuine and likable.

I did not mind her giving up Paris ... and he was not a jerk at all ...

and yeah, she was so awful and rude! She ruined the whole film!

I must say that although I absolutely enjoy classic movies, silent, black and white and everything that came afterwards, this movie would, by no means, go on a list of memorable movies I've seen.

I can appreciate how a female character like Jenny was somewhat "daring"for the time, and I think the story itself is nice, but the charactes are not likable and that combined with the bad acting killed it for me.
Both main characters were bad, but Ali MacGraw was just awful, specially in the emotional scenes! I was streaming the movie online and still felt like I had to reach for the remote and change the channel when Jenny was attempting to cry. I don't recall having seen any of the actors in other projects, so I can't for sure tell if they are always that bad or if they were poorly directed as well.

The soundtrack on the other hand is beautiful! and for that reason it was worth having seen this movie. I can appreciate what made it a classic back then, but I as I said, nothing remarkable, specially since there are so many great movies made before and after this one.
