The title of the tune is "Garryowen," sometimes spelled "Garry Owen." Custer loved this tune. He made it the theme of the US Army's 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regement, which he led into battle at the Little Big Horn. The 7th Cav is now nicknamed "Garry Owen" in honor of those who died there. "Garryowen" is an Irish drinking song (not Scottish as is often believed). Custer selected it because it can also be used as a military quick march.

3. A nice MIDI file of the tune plays over this page. The MIDI is downloadable. Also has links to info about the 7th Cav, Custer and traditional Irish songs.

I have been looking for this piece of information for years! Thanks!!!
shareThe Garryowen was traditionally associated with cavalry before Custer's day - George MacDonald Fraser references it in his "Flashman" novel "Flashman at the Charge" as being popular in the British cavalry at the time of the Crimean War.
(And while Harry Flashman and his adventures are fictitious, Fraser takes good care to make the surrounding history as accurate as possible.)
